Planning ahead is one of the biggest keys to success. Whether you're making a list before heading to the grocery store or putting down your goals at the start of each year in a journal or on a vision board, many of us understand the importance of looking forward. So, it shouldn't be surprising to hear that being proactive about certain things each evening can have a positive impact on our mornings.
On March 10's episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast, the mindset expert and best-selling author of The Let Them Theory shared with her listeners a handful of bedtime habits that can help you "wake up focused, recharged and in control."
One of her favorites? A hack that only takes five minutes.

"Clean up the mess so you start your day fresh," Robbins explained. "Because you got all this stuff all over the kitchen counter. You got all this stuff lying on the floor. You got all this stuff spread out all over the place. You got all this stuff piled up in the sink. How does that make you feel? It makes me feel like I'm behind. It makes me feel like I got stuff that I need to do that I should have done yesterday that's now sitting here staring at me right in the face first thing in the morning."
However, that doesn't mean you have to go crazy, pulling out your mop bucket and yellow gloves while you're already in your PJs.
"It takes five minutes—like, I'm not talking about doing a deep clean," she emphasized. "I'm talking about just cleaning up the mess. Why? So when you wake up tomorrow, it's fresh. You're calm, you're in control. You got nothing you gotta do but just step into the day.

"What I love about this is I do this on autopilot," Robbins continued, explaining that after a long day, it doesn't have to take a lot of energy to do this five-minute sweep around the house.
It requires minimal energy, and yet the impact is significant.
"Multiple studies show that living in a messy environment, it actually raises your stress level because you see things that aren't done," she told her listeners. "And when you wake up to yesterday's mess, it drains all of your energy for today before you even get into your day."
See ya, nightly doom scroll—we've got a new bedtime ritual in mind.
