UCSD Scientists Rally as a Response to Federal Cuts

As UC San Diego stood to lose more than $150 million in federal funding, directly threatening scientific research, thousands of science professors and graduate students rallied outside the university’s Geisel Library on Friday.

At the Stand Up for Science protest, protesters expressed grave concerns about the effects of the cuts on ongoing research and future scientific discoveries.

The Trump administration’s proposed cap on National Institutes of Health indirect cost reimbursements would result in an annual loss of more than $150 million at UC San Diego alone.

“When funding is cut, it doesn’t just impact researchers,” said Grace Cawley, a Ph.D. student at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “It threatens the entire infrastructure that supports ocean science and resource management.”

According to TheScientist, universities like UCSD have already reduced PhD admissions in response to federal funding cuts.

“Already on this campus and throughout the country, there is a freeze on hiring new faculty,” said Brenda Bloodgood, an associate professor of biological sciences.

“We must stand for science. Stand up for science, or we stand to lose a generation of scientists and all the discoveries they would make.”

On March 5, a district court judge issued a nationwide preliminary injunction that preserves NIH funding for facilities and administration costs at the existing level.

The University of California Office of the President has created a targeted campaign to advocate for safeguarding NIH funding and scientific research.
