A journalist’s prolonged question led to Jose Mourinho pretending to fall asleep after Fenerbahce’s Europe League defeat.
Mourinho oversaw his side get completely outplayed at home against Rangers in a 3-1 last 16 first leg loss.
It leaves Fenerbahce with a huge task at Ibrox next week if they are to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.
Speaking after the home tie, legendary boss Mourinho was asked what went wrong and honestly answered: “Everything.”
“The result is good for us,” he continued. “I know that [Jack] Butland had two or three fantastic saves but I would say that the result was closer to being bigger than smaller, so for us it’s a good result.”
However, one question in particular seemed too much for Mourinho after Fenerbahce all but left their European hopes in tatters.
He appeared increasingly disinterested when a journalist delivered a lengthy passage of speech before resting his head onto his hand.
The football icon then closed his eyes as if he had fallen asleep, with his translator finally relaying the question to him in English.
“Oh, this is too much for my head,” Mourinho said. “I’m tired man. 90 minutes, now to listen to all of this… I’m too tired for that.”
Mourinho was also asked whether or not his players underestimated Rangers’ European form and responded: “If they did, I didn’t.
“If they didn’t it’s not my fault, because I prepared the game as always, I spoke a lot, we saw a lot, we didn’t have much time to prepare the match but we did our normal job.
“The fact that they played five in the back, more defensive with a low block counter-attack is something in European football that happens many, many times, especially with teams that play away.
Mourinho didn’t hide his displeasure at one journalist’s question@footballontnt X So much so he pretended to fall asleep at the desk@footballontnt X“We spoke about it, we spoke that it would be possible that they would do that. They put the low block, everybody behind to counter-attack; they deserved the result.”
Mourinho’s defeat with Fenerbahce comes after he seemed to leave the door open to managing either Rangers or Celtic.
However, despite the former being without a permanent boss, he insisted that he already has a job with the Turkish side.
Rangers, who were thought to be in disarray after sacking Philippe Clement and losing 2-1 to Motherwell, were dominant from the off in Turkey.
Cyriel Dessers opened the scoring inside eight minutes, and although Alexander Djiku equalised on the half-hour mark, it was all one-way traffic after that.
Vaclav Cerny scored once before the break and again in the 81st minute, but Fenerbahce twice had to rely on VAR to cancel out two more goals from the visitors.
Mourinho was once again his entertaining self during his press conferenceGettyRangers also had to deal with a lengthy disruption in the first-half when Butland headbutted his own player, Robin Propper.
The defender was down on the turf for four minutes receiving treatment, but it didn’t deter Barry Ferguson’s side, who were runners-up in the competition in 2022.
