Upper Mill Creek Pond: Trout, trout, trout. Upper Mill Creek Pond-The steel/head trout stocking program sin full swing right now. The Upper Mill Creek Pond fish stocking schedule are usually not published in advance. I hear about them after the fact. It’s a good thing … Can you just imagine all the people that would be up there if it was public knowledge? Thank you California Department of Fish & Wildlife for doing such a fine job stocking this waterway.
Clear Lake: One of America’s top bass fisheries is the place to be right now ! The word is that the bass have started to move up in the shallows. Last week many bass were hanging out some off the outer piers on docks and tules at around 10-15 ft. of water. But, the nice weather has got some of the big boys (and girls) moving up checking out the spawning grounds. Drop shot, Jigs, swimbaits and the A rig’s have all been working well.
Boy, Clear Lake is a very busy place. Did you know that so far Clear Lake is scheduled host somewhere near 80 bass tournaments next 8 months , that’s like 10 tournaments each month.
On March 15 & 16 one of the oldest bass tournaments in California will kick off the bass tournament season. The 37th Annual Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce Bass Tournament. Formerly, the Holder Ford tournament. This tournament is expected to have well over 150 teams entered. Looking forward to seeing the results. I predict that there will be a team that will bring in a 5 bass limit weighing over 30 pounds. Lets see?
The Upper Blue Lakes : Wooo-hooo! One of Ukiah’s most experienced anglers told me that the trout fishin’ on Blue Lakes starting to get good right now! The folks trolling have been doing the best. The trout are hold in about 20 feet of water. Running thru them with a action disc trailed with a wooly-buger has been working well. Also, folks that are fishing from docks or along Hwy. 20 have hooked into some beauty’s using powerbait off the bottom.
Good Luck.
Lake Mendocino : Our hometown lake has a variety of species of game fish. Every species of fish are starting to biting. Crappie, Red Ears, Catfish, a few Stripers, Large and Smallmouth Bass and don’t forget about the reintroduced Rainbow Trout. The bass in Lake Mendocino are eating really good ! So, it is not uncommon to hook in to a nice 5 – 10 pounder now and then., Good baits right now are a Storm Crappie swimbait. Rat-L-Traps, drop shotting, senkos or Robo worms and slow dragging a Brushhog or Sweet Beaver.
Lake Sonoma : The bass fishing action has begun to pick up on Lake Sonoma. The best areas to fish are the creek arms at the north end of the lake and the marina area. Pitchin’ crawdad colored jigs or watermellon candy colored brushhogs have been producing bass. Concentrate on fallen timber and/or rocks. Also try a chartreuse colored spinnerbait in and around the submerged trees.
Lake Pillsbury : There is not much going on up on the mountain. There really isn’t anyone fishing the lake right now so, there isn’t much to report on. I would think that like all the lakes in our area right now, the bass are starting to move up getting ready to spawn. You know, “they” say that 10 percent of the anglers catch 90 percent of the fish. So, go give Lake Pillsbury a try. You’ll probably be the only angler on the water. The odds are on on your side.
Be safe – Be kind – PLEASE practice catch and release!
