MADRID – The Spanish island of Ibiza has agreed a “milestone” deal with Airbnb to remove illegal holiday lettings amid rising tensions over housing, with local people forced to live in caravans, tents and boats.
The Ibiza Council said it had signed the “historic” deal with the holiday letting site to remove advertisements for illegal properties like caravans, tents, yurts, boats and rooms inside flats which are not registered as tourist accommodation.
Airbnb have taken advertisements for 200 illegal lettings from their website but another 300 were expected to be removed this month, according to Ibiza’s council leader, Vicent Marí.
Rafael Gimenez is a spokesman for Prou Ibiza, a protest group which has staged demonstrations over the lack of affordable accommodation for local people which the group says is caused by the rising number of expensive tourist flats.
