Hugh Freeze is gearing up for the 2025 season with a new quarterback at the helm for Auburn. That player comes in the form of Jackson Arnold, the former Oklahoma starter who entered college as a major 5-star recruit.
Of course, that rating has taken a hit coming off his first season as a starter in college football. However, it’s equally true that Auburn gives Arnold a chance for a fresh start and the tools to potentially help him rebound into form.
While at the SEC Spring Meetings, Freeze was asked about what drew him to Arnold initially, and the head coach was not bashful. He recalled watching Arnold’s high school film and not seeing a weakness in his game.
After getting his feet wet with the Tigers, Freeze was mainly concerned about Arnold regaining his confidence, something he believes Auburn’s wide receiver room will help him.
“There were no weaknesses. There was a reason he was the Gatorade Player of the Year,” said Hugh Freeze. “Everything I saw in the spring validated what I knew of him as a recruit.
“He’s got the arm strength, he’s got enough mobility, he’s got a high enough football IQ, a competitive spirit. He just needed some confidence, I think our receiver room helps him with that… I’m excited to see what he’s going to do this fall.”

One SEC coach admitted it looks like the Tigers have the right QB to implement the system, and another coach described Arnold as a “Day 1 upgrade” over what Auburn had previously.
If Arnold can live up to those expectations, the Tigers should be in line for a massive jump this fall.
