Damascus reaches agreement with AANES regarding a-Hol camp

The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has announced that it has reached an agreement with the Syrian government to organize a mechanism aimed at evacuating Syrian families from the al-Hol camp, which houses families of fighters from the Islamic State group in the eastern al-Hasakah governorate.

AANES published a statement through its official accounts on social media, on Monday, May 26, stating that the head of the Office of Refugee and Displaced Affairs in AANES, Sheikhmos Ahmed, announced that they have agreed with the government to establish a joint mechanism for evacuating Syrian families from the al-Hol camp and returning them to their original areas.

Ahmed announced that a tripartite meeting took place on Sunday, at the al-Hol camp, which included a delegation from the transitional Syrian government, a delegation from the International Coalition, and representatives from AANES.

He stated that the meeting concluded with an agreement to establish a joint mechanism for evacuating the Syrian families residing in the al-Hol camp to put an end to the suffering of these families.

On Sunday, the Qatari channel “Al-Jazeera” reported, citing unnamed sources, that a delegation from the Syrian government accompanied by International Coalition Forces visited the al-Hol camp in al-Hasakah.

It added that the governmental delegation’s visit to the camp comes as part of the agreement between President Ahmed al-Sharaa and the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi.

According to the Qatari channel, a joint committee between the government and the SDF will be announced later to review the files of detainees in prisons in northeastern Syria and those held in the al-Hol camp.

On Sunday, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, Nour al-Din al-Baba, stated during a press conference that the management of the al-Hol camp would be different from what it was previously, noting that they aim to transform it “from an inhumane hotspot to a comprehensive community treatment file.”

Previously, the Syrian government had proposed taking over the prisons and camps managed by the SDF in northeastern Syria for nearly eight years, but the latter firmly rejected it.

With the US rapprochement with Damascus and placing the management of these camps and prisons as a condition for improving relations, the SDF’s position has softened, until it recently announced a meeting with the Syrian government in this regard.

Following a meeting between US President Donald Trump and the transitional Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, the Assistant to the President and Press Secretary of the White House, Karoline Leavitt, stated via “X” that President Trump encouraged President al-Sharaa on five main issues:

Signing the Abraham Accord with Israel. Asking all foreign “terrorists” to leave Syria. Deporting Palestinian “terrorists.” Assisting the United States in preventing the return of the Islamic State group. Taking responsibility for the detention centers of Islamic State elements in northeastern Syria.
