After Missing Out on Matthew Stafford, the Giants Are Reportedly “Shifting Their Focus” to an Aaron Rodgers Pursuit

While the Matthew Stafford saga has come to a close, the Aaron Rodgers one is only beginning.

Days after the Los Angeles Rams allowed their quarterback to communicate with other teams around the NFL in an attempt to gauge his value on the open market, Matthew Stafford found himself going back to Cali:

In addition to the Rams announcing a contract restructure for Matthew Stafford, NFL Network insider Ian Rapport mentions above that this bit of QB news has some fallout regarding the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants. Both teams were reportedly interested in swinging a deal for Stafford before he circled back to Los Angeles. Frankly, it’s laugh out loud funny to think about Stafford linking up with the Raiders and Giants and concluding that he is better off sticking around. Perhaps this should serve as a reminder that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. And even if it is, the odds are that you don’t want to have to maintain a messy lawn.

Also worth noting: Tom Brady is now 0-for-2 in offseason pursuits of high-profile additions with the Raiders. No Ben Johnson. No Matthew Stafford. What’s next? Stay tuned.

Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the QB market

With Matthew Stafford staying with the Rams, the next biggest name on the quarterback market is Aaron Rodgers. In case you missed it, the New York Jets dumped Rodgers right before Valentine’s Day. And while there was a belief that he could snake his way into a wonderful situation with the Los Angeles Rams, that door is now closed. Now, it looks like Rodgers’ best chance to start in 2025 is with New York’s *OTHER* team:

The New York Giants are now shifting their interest to Aaron Rodgers. They’ve been discussing it all week in Indy per sources.

    — Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) February 28, 2025

    More from Russini:

The Giants have discussed the idea of pursuing Rodgers during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this week, per league sources. The news comes after Stafford, a top offseason target for New York, agreed to a restructured deal to stay with the Los Angeles Rams.

While Rodgers, 41, is still under contract with the New York Jets, the club is expected to move on from the veteran quarterback when the 2025 league year begins on March 12. The four-time MVP is not believed to have a robust market, but Rodgers could end up fitting the bill as a stopgap, at the least, in the Giants’ ongoing search for a starting quarterback.

It is hilarious to think about how Aaron Rodgers and his Hall of Fame résumé is left playing quarterback musical chairs *AND* could end up stuck in a situation in which he serves as a placeholder for a quarterback prospect to be selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. Reporting from Russini and The Athletic does not rule out the Giants selecting Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders with their first-round pick, which is the third overall selection in April’s draft.

The New York Football Giants quarterback room was so down bad in 2024 that Aaron Rodgers in his decline era represents a notable upgrade. Since posting back-to-back 4,000+ yard passing seasons and 116.7 passer rating over the final two years of his time with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers went to New York and laid an egg. Aaron Rodgers’ finished his time with the Jets completing 62.9 percent of his passes, throwing for 3,897 yards, tossing 28 touchdowns, posting a 90.5 passer rating, and leading his team to a 6-12 record as a starter. But hey, maybe things will be different with New York’s NFC team.

There is no love lost between Bears fans and Aaron Rodgers. With that in mind, it is worth pointing out that the Giants *ARE* on Chicago’s list of opponents in 2025. And in what could be a fun twist, the G-Men are set to visit Soldier Field this season. So if the Giants end up with Rodgers, it could result in another grudge match against the Bears. Oh, what a dream it would be to see Rodgers lose in Chicago one last time.
