Protesters have clashed with riot police in central Athens, as tens of thousands of people took to the streets of cities across Greece to mark the second anniversary of a fatal train crash.
Demonstrators were seen throwing molotov cocktails at officers and smashing paving stones, while police fired volleys of tear gas and stun grenades into the crowd near the capital’s Syntagma Square.
Paramedics were seen carrying at least one protester away from the scene, where a rally was taking place to to demand justice for the 57 people killed on 28 February 2023, when a passenger train collided head-on with a freight train outside the city of Larissa in central Greece.
Flights and rail services have been cancelled, ferries halted and public transportation across the country has been severely disrupted.

The protests and a general strike were part of a mass mobilisation, led by relatives of the 57 victims.
Critics say that politicians should be held accountable for failures that led up to the crash, but so far only rail officials have been charged with any crimes.
