Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon has been taking some time off from his acting career to play rock star by fronting a touring R.E.M. tribute band with noted indie rock musician Jason Narducy and a slew of other all-star players.
On Thursday, Feb. 27 at the 40 Watt Club in R.E.M.’s hometown of Athens, Ga., Shannon and Narducy dug deep into the R.E.M. catalog to perform “Pretty Persuasion,” from the 1984 album Reckoning, and some special guests jumped on stage to join in the performance.

R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe dueted with Shannon on the song about sexual confusion while R.E.M.’s Peter Buck played guitar. Mid-song, bassist Mike Mills jumped on stage to lend some backing vocals while drummer Bill Berry soon followed on tambourine.
Shannon, dressed in shorts and a T-shirt with the words “No one left behind,” traded vocals with Stipe, who was clad in beige pants and jacket, tinted glasses and a beanie.
It’s only the second time that all four members of the iconic band have performed on stage together since disbanding in 2011. Last year, the group made a surprise appearance performing their 1991 hit “Losing My Religion” to celebrate their induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
While the Shannon-Narducy tour is in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act’s third album, Fables of the Reconstruction, the band also plays other material by R.E.M.
At Shannon and Narducy’s previous appearance in Athens, Ga. in 2024, Buck, Mills and Berry performed with the band at various times, and Stipe appeared on stage to thank the band, but he did not sing with the group that night.
Shannon referred to that Thursday night before performing with Stipe and company. “And now at long last the final member of the quartet joins the stage, and the mystery is complete.”
