Windows AI Development: New Capabilities and Tools (Build 2025)

The Microsoft Build 2025 conference marked a significant milestone in the evolution of AI development capabilities for Windows. Although specific new tools tailored for Windows were not extensively outlined, the event highlighted the broader integration of AI across Microsoft's suite of products. Notably, advancements such as the transformation of GitHub Copilot into an asynchronous coding agent suggest that developers will experience enhanced coding assistance and improved workflows, positioning Windows as a vital platform in this AI-enhanced landscape . The implications of these developments are profound, suggesting a shift towards more intelligent software solutions.

The announcement, which was made at Microsoft’s Build 2025 conference on Monday, comes as MCP gains steam in the AI industry. Earlier this year, both OpenAI and Google said they would support MCP in their respective AI products.

MCP lets models draw data from sources like business tools and software to complete tasks, as well as from content repositories and app development environments. The protocol enables developers to build two-way connections between data sources and AI-powered applications, such as chatbots.

Developers can expose data through “MCP servers” and build “MCP clients” — for instance, apps and workflows — that connect to those servers on command.

Microsoft and GitHub say that they’ll deliver “broad first-party support” for MCP across their platforms and services, including Microsoft Azure and Windows 11. For example, in the next few months, Windows will gain MCP integrations that allow developers to expose the functionality of apps to MCP-enabled models.

GitHub Copilot has unveiled a new AI-powered coding agent that has been designed to automate regular development tasks and augment productivity, enabling developers to prioritise complex work. The agent can be assigned tasks through GitHub issues or Copilot Chat in Visual Studio Code. Once assigned, the agent begins a secure development environment using GitHub Actions, clones the repository, and analyses the codebase. Throughout this process, the agent commits changes to a draft pull request and offers session logs for transparency.

Moreover, the introduction of over 50 new AI tools signifies Microsoft's commitment to advancing agent technologies that transcend traditional assistant roles. These agents are designed to autonomously initiate tasks and execute complex workflows with reduced human oversight . This move addresses existing limitations in AI capabilities, particularly regarding memory and task management. As these innovations unfold within the Windows ecosystem, they promise to transform how developers engage with technology and streamline their programming processes.
