COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- One person is dead after police officers were reportedly shot at during a barricade situation Monday night in northeast Columbus.
According to Columbus police, officers responded to the 4000 block of Hampton Woods Drive in the Strawberry Farms area at approximately 9:40 p.m. for an unknown complaint. A person who called 911 told police that it sounded like a man was assaulting a woman inside of an apartment and that he was threatening to kill her.
When officers arrived at around 10 p.m. they were reportedly shot at while the woman was being held hostage. SWAT and hostage negotiators were notified and responded to the scene.
Columbus Division of Police Sgt. Joe Albert said over the next hour he was able to make contact with the man over the phone and with the assistance of negotiators attempted to deescalate the incident. The suspect continued to fire shots at SWAT officers on multiple occasions.
"He fired out of the residence multiple times at SWAT officers at the scene. At their equipment, at the SWAT officers who were outside of the residence,” Albert said. “So, this male was very violent. Had no regard for the police at scene here. Was obviously attempting to harm multiple police officers here at scene.”
At 11:46 p.m. the man reportedly opened the door while holding the woman and raised a gun, at which time officers shot and injured him. He was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m. The woman was able to escape and run towards safety.
Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 9 President Brian Steel said the incident stemmed from a domestic situation in which a woman was being held captive by a man. The woman who escaped the home was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
The man's identify is being withheld pending next of kin notification. No officers were injured and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation remains at the scene to process the scene.
