The WNBA will look a lot different next season.
After 20+ season of professional basketball, women’s basketball icon Diana Taurasi has announced her retirement. The 42-year-old broke the news to TIME in an exclusive interview where she reflected on her historic journey and all the success that came along with it.
“Mentally and physically, I’m just full,” Taurasi told TIME. “That’s probably the best way I can describe it. I’m full and I’m happy.”
Diana Taurasi Annonunces Retirement
Viewed by many as the WNBA’s Greatest of All-Time, Diana Taurasi departs with three league championships, an MVP trophy, 11 All-Star appearances, and ten All-WNBA First Team nods. On top of that, she finished as the WNBA’s scoring leader in five different seasons, won three NCAA Championships with the UConn Huskies, and won six EuroLeague titles when playing overseas during the offseason.
But the winning doesn’t stop there! Arguably most impressive of all is her SIX olympic gold medals. Competed in every Olympics from 2004-2024, she is one of the most decorated olympic basketball players of all-time. No other player – man or woman – has taken home as many golds as Taurasi.
To no surprise, Taurasi will leave the WNBA with a strong hold on the all-time scoring title. Her 10,646 points – all scored with the Phoenix Mercury – sit well ahead of Tina Charles’ 7,696. She will also finish her career first in three-pointers made and fourth in total assists.
The WNBA Mount Rushmore can’t be built without Taurasi front and center. She cemented her legacy well before today’s news broke, and the league the wouldn’t be in the successful place it is today without her paving the path.
Congrats on an outstanding career, Taurasi!
