North Carolina has made a decision on its vacant general manager position, according to a report.
HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto was first to share the news late Monday night that Jim Tanner will fill the role. Tanner is a long-time NBA agent and a North Carolina alum. Scotto points out that Tanner represented all-time greats such as Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, Dominique Wilkins and Ray Allen during his career.

Head coach Hubert Davis confirmed plans to hire a GM for the first time earlier this season, citing a growing list of responsibilities with NIL, fundraising and other non-basketball items.
“The old model for Carolina basketball just doesn’t work, it’s not sustainable,” Davis said in February, via Inside Carolina. “It has to build out because there’s so many things in play with NIL, the transfer portal, agents, international players. You just need a bigger staff to be able to maintain things, and you need a bigger staff so I can do what I’m supposed to be doing, (which) is coaching basketball.”
The general manager position has become paramount in college sports, particularly at high levels of football and men’s basketball. With Tanner set to join the program before the end of the season, he’ll presumably be able to work ahead on the UNC roster for 2025-26 while Davis and his staff worry about closing out the 2024-25 season on a high note.
North Carolina is 19-11 on the season. The Tar Heels will look for win No. 20 on Saturday against Miami.
