Walmart shopper stopped by ‘startling’ self-checkout feature that kept flagging ‘error’ – workers had to intervene

A WALMART shopper was stopped in his tracks by a “stupid” checkout policy that forced an employee to intervene.

The “aggravated” customer took to the social media platform X to voice their lengthy complaint that also tackled rising inflation rates.

His post from Monday read: “I went grocery shopping at the Wal-Mart neighborhood market @Walmart.

“I weep inside every time because no matter what the government says, inflation is still raging, and it is much higher than they will admit.

“On top of that, I had to do a self-checkout, but their stupid camera kept flagging me as “not scanning items before bagging them,” which was not valid.

“I was so aggravated that I told Karen, monitoring the self-checkout, to scan my items.

“I stood back and watched her do it. Even at Wal-Mart, the sheer surveillance you are under is startling and frankly scary.

“I can’t wait for them to demand that we put cameras in our homes. We already have our phones and webcams watching us at all times, but it will hit home when they push that.

“I’ve seen too many conspiracy theories become conspiracy facts to know this is the end goal of even our most benevolent government leaders.”

The paranoid tirade took aim at Walmart‘s checkout system, which in this instance failed to properly can the shopper’s items.

This left him forced to ask an employee for help, majorly inconveniencing him and prolonging his trip.

However, the use of cameras in stores is not a Walmart-only policy, as many retailers do it to monitor customer safety and any illegal activity.

Self checkout machines have been widely implemented across the retail sector to speed up shopping and let people exit the store as quickly as possible.

It is unclear if the problem faced in this post is a one-time issue or more prevalent in Walmart‘s checkout machines.

The store has not directly responded to the post.

    CUSTOMER’S CRISIS

The US Sun recently reported on another customer incident at Walmart, this time involving the store’s membership scheme.

The complaint said that he is not getting proper value for his membership if there isn’t a dedicated set of checkout machines that loyalty customers can use.

The post from James on Sunday said: “@Walmarthelp @Walmart we have been loyal members of Walmart plus, unfortunately every time we do scan and go we have to wait in line for multiple people using the self checkout just to scan the goofy barcode, can you develop a register that only Walmart plus members can use.

“Or do it like Sam’s club where you don’t have to interact with a register, please, this is almost ruined Walmart plus benefits!!!”

One of the benefits that Walmart plus members get is an option for mobile scan and go.

What is Walmart's Scan and Go?

Walmart's Scan and Go was made to save time for shoppers

Walmart’s Scan and Go system was created to help customers scan items as they shop, pay, and leave without waiting in long checkout lines.

The retailer describes the new system to be done in a few easy steps:

Customers first need to have the Walmart app downloaded on their phones with their location access enabled. On the Store Mode landing page, shoppers must click the Scan and Go option. Customers can scan each item and place them in their carts as they shop. At the end, they’ll be prompted to view the cart to make sure the quantity on the app matches the ones in their carts. Shoppers will press “Check Out” and head to a self-checkout kiosk. They’ll be prompted to scan the provided QR code at the register and confirm their payment method. Once the transaction is complete, shoppers can leave the store without worry.

Members don’t have to scan their items at the checkout, they do it as they go and then scan one barcode before they leave.

But this post suggests that this policy is not being used properly.

It defeats the point if customers still have to wait in line for a long time.

Scan and go is designed to be a quick process, but this complaint points out that isn’t the case

Walmart responded to the complaint, saying: “Thanks for the information, James.

“Let’s see what we can do to make your store checkout more convenient.

“Would you DM us about this?”
