Activists on social media circulated news indicating that an armed attack had occurred against the governor of As-Suwayda, Mustafa al-Bakour, in the governorate building on Wednesday, May 21.
Reports suggest that al-Bakour was assaulted by an armed group to force the governor to release some prisoners whom the government accuses of theft and offenses.
Armed assault
In a statement obtained by Enab Baladi, the director of media relations at the Ministry of Information, Ali al-Rifai, described the incident as a “serious event threatening civil peace,” noting that “an armed group outside the law stormed the governorate building with the aim of releasing Raghib Qarqout, convicted of multiple car thefts before his arrest and during his time in Damascus.”
Al-Rifai added that the group was led by Fadi Nasr, with support from Tariq al-Nagoush and others, coinciding with the presence of Governor Dr. Mustafa al-Bakour and some employees in the building.
The attackers displayed their automatic weapons at the governor and the employees, as well as the building’s security personnel, after closing the doors, pretending to demand the illegal release of a detainee in a car theft case, who was a relative.
“Under the pressure of arms and the seriousness of the situation, the convicted person was released,” according to al-Rifai, noting that the same group is involved in similar theft incidents.
Following the incident, national factions from As-Suwayda intervened, led by Liwa al-Jabal, which worked to expel the lawless group, and the Men of Dignity movement mobilized to secure the governor’s exit from the location, according to the media relations director’s statement.
Al-Rifai firmly emphasized that “enforcing the law and ensuring security in As-Suwayda governorate is an irreversible choice,” adding, “We will work hand in hand with all patriotic citizens from its people to guarantee its stability.”
Delegating to factions
Due to the repeated violations by some individuals against judicial and police officials, resulting in chaos and disorder, the Sheikhs of the Mind in As-Suwayda delegated local and community factions to support the tasks of the judiciary and police institutions, aiming to enhance the rule of law and deter any harmful violations.
This was based on the agreement reached by references and sheikhs and notables of As-Suwayda during a meeting on May 1, which aimed to activate the role of the judicial police and the police from the people of the governorate.
The statement urged all factions and community groups to fully cooperate with the judicial police and law enforcement agencies, warning against any assault on these institutions or their members tasked with legal responsibilities while affirming that achieving security and stability has become a top priority requiring the collective efforts of all community activities.
The statement called on all police units and their personnel from the residents of the governorate to actively and diligently resume their tasks on the ground to enforce the law and establish security, reinforcing support for this role.
May 1 Agreement
A statement issued by representatives of the Druze community in As-Suwayda, which Enab Baladi obtained a copy of, called on May 1 for the state to activate security in the governorate and protect the road leading to the capital, Damascus.
They demanded securing the As-Suwayda-Damascus road, holding the government responsible for it, and called for establishing security and safety in Syrian territories.
The statement emphasized a commitment to “a nation that encompasses all Syrians, free from strife, sectarian divisions, personal resentments, vendettas, and the irrational tribal mentality,” as described by them.
The statement rejected calls for division and separation from Syria, affirming “a firm national stance.”
The statement followed a meeting that included representatives from the Druze community in As-Suwayda, led by the spiritual leader of the community, Hikmat al-Hijri, and the Sheikhs of the Mind, Youssef al-Jarbou’ and Hamoud al-Hanawi, alongside local faction leaders, notably Yahya al-Hajjar and Laith al-Balous.
The statement coincided with movements of convoys belonging to the General Security of the Ministry of Interior, indicating implementation of the steps outlined in the statement.
This statement came after tensions were witnessed in cities and towns predominantly inhabited by Druze, between factions of the Druze community and others loyal to the state, following an audio recording insulting the Prophet Muhammad, attributed to a Druze sheikh, which the latter denied.
