A BELOVED grocery chain known for its affordable prices has plans to open over 225 new locations across the US this year.

German-based grocer Aldi will open the stores as part of its five-year national expansion plan.

This is the largest number of stores the chain will open in the US in one year since launching in the country nearly 50 years ago, per a press release from earlier this month.

Aldi, the fastest-growing grocer in the country, shared that the new locations would comprise both organic growth and converted Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores.

The chain plans to transform around 220 Southeastern Grocers locations to the Aldi format through 2027.

Aldi purchased Southeastern Grocers in August 2023, and when the transaction was completed in March 2024, it gained approximately 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores.

The acquisition added to Aldi’s store footprint across the Southeast in states such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

    Aldi's Acquisition

Aldi announced it would acquire Winn-Dixie and other stores such as Harveys Supermarkets from Southeastern Grocers in August 2023.

As part of the acquisition, many of the locations will be converted into Aldi stores.

“We are evaluating which locations will convert to the Aldi format to better support the neighborhoods we’ll now have the privilege of serving,” CEO James Hart said in a statement last year.

The company announced that it had closed a deal this month to sell roughly 170 of the Southeastern Grocers stores not part of the chain’s conversion plan to a group of investors led by C&S Wholesale Grocers and the former CEO of Southeastern Grocers.

“When we announced our acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, we shared that we intended for a meaningful number of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets to continue to operate, and we’re delivering on that promise while also supporting ALDI growth,” said Jason Hart, CEO of Aldi.

“Over the last year, we’ve seen firsthand how C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers and their teams have continued to deliver great quality, service and value to their customers, and we are confident they will lead the company successfully into its next chapter.”

As Aldi divests around half of the acquired stores and converts the rest, the company aims to continue to fulfill its goal of providing affordable, quality groceries to consumers.

“As shoppers continue to feel sticker shock at the checkout, the value ALDI delivers can’t be beat,” added Hart.

Around 100 converted Southeastern Grocers locations will reopen as Aldi stores by the end of this year, and several grand openings are already underway.

Following its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, Aldi announced its $9 billion plan to open 800 locations in the US by the end of 2028.

In addition to its growth in the Southeast, the chain aims to expand in the Northeast and Midwest, increase its reach in the West with more locations in Southern California and Arizona, and enter new areas such as Las Vegas.

“With our expansion across the country, ALDI is earning the trust of more shoppers in more communities than ever before, bringing us closer to becoming America’s first stop for groceries,” said the CEO.

    Al-DI RAGE

Aldi is a shopping destination for many due to its low prices and no-frills model, drawing in 19 million new shoppers in 2024, per the press release.

The company opened roughly 120 stores last year, upping its store count to over 2,400 and solidifying its stance as the third-largest US grocery store.

Over one in four households shop at Aldi for its affordable groceries, with shoppers saving an average of 36% on their household shopping list, according to the chain.

“For a family of four, that’s nearly $4,000 a year,” shared Hart.

Aldi fans have not been shy to share their love of the chain’s budget-friendly groceries.

“My family loves Aldi,” shared a Facebook user. “They have some very unique and often less expensive options for meal planning.”

“I like a lot of their stuff and so much of it is cheaper than Walmart,” praised another fan.

“Aldi is great!!” raved a third, as another shopper called it their “favorite store.”

The chain is currently offering some great deals, including a viral kitchen essential for just $4.99 – but it won’t last long on the shelves.

Aldi also dropped the newest version of its “magical” $13 kitchen appliance – it’s identical to Pottery Barn but over 75% cheaper.
