Bidder registration is now open for San Diego County’s online property tax auction with an initial listing of 637 properties.
“The properties for sale have been in tax default for five or more years. In accordance with the California Revenue & Taxation Code, it’s time to get the properties back on the tax roll generating revenue for public services,” said San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister.
The county, McAllister said, stands to bring in $16.3 million in tax revenue if all the properties sell for the minimum bid.
The high in recent years, though, is less than half that. The county made $7.8 million from the sale in 2017 and $7.5 million the following year.
Anyone can bid during the auction from March 14-19, but to participate, bidders must register online before March 6 at the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s tax auction website.
They also must submit a refundable $1,000 deposit and a non-refundable $35 processing fee (some parcels may require a larger deposit).
Those who are interested may do their research online, exploring the 65 residential or commercial properties, 488 timeshares and 84 parcels of land for sale from throughout the county. All auction sales are final, so this is a “buyer-beware” sale, officials said.
Potential bidders may sign up for email reminders about deadlines at sdttc.com.
Owners of the auctioned properties still can avoid going to sale; they have until 5 p.m. March 13 to redeem their parcels and pay all taxes and fees owed. Every effort is made to contact the owners of these properties to notify them about the impending sale.
