Winning a three-peat is tough — just ask the Kansas City Chiefs.
Michael Jordan did it twice with the Chicago Bulls as part of a dominant 1990s franchise that claimed six NBA Championships.
He is also one of few men to win the Slam Dunk Contest back-to-back.
Mac McClung soared to new heights on Saturday as he claimed a third consecutive crown.
The G League athlete has played just five minutes in the NBA for the Orlando Magic this season.
But with superstars including LeBron James and Ja Morant sitting out, the 6ft 2in hooper can conjure up tricks nobody can match on All-Star weekend.
Scoring a perfect 50 on four dunks, which included a leap over a Kia sedan, there was only one winner — the man single-handedly saving the Dunk Contest.
The 26-year-old beat Matas Buzelis of the Chicago Bulls, Stephon Castle of the San Antonio Spurs, and Andre Jackson Jr. of the Milwaukee Bucks to join Nate Robinson as the only three-time winner and first to go back-to-back-to-back.
“I had a lot of help,” McClung said after being crowned. “People were opening gyms to fit a car in, people were letting me use their car, I’m just really grateful right now.
“This might be it for me but we’ll see. If they want me back bad enough, I’ll think about it.”
NFL icon Shannon Sharpe is a massive fan of McClung and challenged fans to pick four names who could keep him off the Mount Rushmore of dunkers.
“Mac ‘The White Kangaroo’ McClung is a Mt Rushmore Dunker. I challenge you 2 name 4 dunkers that keep him off that mountain,” he wrote on X.
GettyJordan could throw down but never managed a three-peat[/caption] Morant says he could enter next year“Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, Vince Carter, and Dr. J (Julius Irving),” replied journalist Roland Martin.
“Ro, you my dawg. I disagree. The creativity and elevation of McClung is a difference maker. IF* he was a star ppl would say. He’s the gr8est dunker,” Sharpe insisted.
Only Zach LaVine (2016), Aaron Gordon (2020) and Derrick Jones Jr. (2020) have posted four dunks worth 50 points in a single edition.
And while McClung has obviously not enjoyed the same NBA career of Jordan, Wilkins and Irving, there are few who can match him for creativity.
His heel clipped the car on his first attempt at clearing the Kia and he admitted that he doubted he could pull it off.
“I was like, ‘I can’t do this dunk. I’m landing on the car. I can’t do it.’
“The guy I worked with for dunks, he helped me. He was just like, ‘Just jump over the car.’
“I’m like, ‘It’s not that easy, man.’ They taught me a technique how to do it, and we got it like three, four times in a row and I felt confident doing it.”
If he does return, McClung may have more competition next year.
“Mac might make me decide to dunk,” Morant posted on X.
“If you do it. I’ll do it with you,” replied Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
A four-peat would make Sharpe’s argument hard to ignore.
