Did Axar Patel’s 19th over “hangover” cost DC match against RCB?

Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel might have erred by giving the 19th over to Mukesh Kumar instead of Mitchell Starc. The pacer conceded 19 runs off the last over as RCB romped home to a 6-wicket win at the Arun Jaitley stadium in Delhi. Axar’s decision was just baffling, given that their best death over bowler Starc still had an over left to bowl but wasn’t used.

Axar’s choice of Mukesh over Starc costs DC

It all seemed to be under control for DC towards the death overs, with RCB needing 38 runs off 24 deliveries. Mukesh was handed the ball in the 17th over, and he ended up conceding 12 runs from it. DC still had the game in their hands, with RCB needing 26 off 18.

The next over was bowled by Chameera, who went to leak 9 runs but managed to take a wicket. However, the last over was when RCB quite literally snatched the game away from DC.

Instead of going to Starc, who had defended 9 runs in the final over of the game against RR, Axar opted for Mukesh. And that was the end.

With 15 required off 12 deliveries, Tim David went berserk, smashing one six and three fours to seal the game for RCB.

To make matters worse, the over included one no-ball as well, which was smashed for a boundary. Eventually, it took RCB just three legal deliveries off the 19th over to win the game.

Eventually, Tim David stayed unbeaten after smashing 19 off just 5 deliveries while Krunal Pandya managed 73* off 47 deliveries at the end of the game.

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar reckons that it was Axar’s hangover from the previous game which resulted in him trusting Mukesh over Starc.

“It must be the hangover from the [game against RR]. Axar must have thought that since Starc had defended nine runs in that last over, so let’s give this to Mukesh and see,” Bangar opined.
