The San Diego Foundation has established a $1 million endowment for the Monarch School to support students who lack shelter.
The support is part of the foundation’s Fifty & Forward Campaign campaign, which has secured $880 million of a $1 billion fundraising goal focused on education, children and families and the environment.
The Monarch School is among the scores of local nonprofits that have benefitted, with the community foundation awarding more than than $335 million from the campaign to date.
“Fifty & Forward provides opportunities for San Diegans to align their charitable giving and make a transformational impact on critical community needs that, when met, can change the trajectory of San Diegans’ lives for generations,” said Mark Stuart, the foundation’s president and CEO.
The $1 million legacy gift to Monarch School is from the estate of Ernest Llynn Lotecka, a San Diego-based behavioral health psychologist. The Monarch School, which serves K-12 students without secure housing, will benefit from expanded teacher training and the revenue stability that an endowment can provide.
“We are deeply grateful for Dr. Lotecka’s generosity and love for our community,” said Afira DeVries, Monarch’s president and CEO. “This gift enables us to train more San Diego and California educators to support unhoused students, expanding our impact and advancing advocacy efforts to build a stronger, more equitable future for the youth and families we serve.”
A Monarch alumnus, Jorge Trevino, class of 2020, said of the school’s impact, “If it wasn’t for Monarch staff and community, I’m not sure where I would be at. They brought a safe place for students of all ages to hang out and learn.”
As the foundation marks its 50th anniversary, the Fifty & Forward Campaign was created with a goal of granting $500 million to nonprofits while raising $1 billion to fuel impact for the next 50 years.
Since the 2021 start of the campaign, the foundation has announced several major initiatives to improve quality of life in San Diego, including a partnership with the Dr. Seuss Foundation to grant $3.5 million to help children ages 0 to 5 thrive, and the Binational Resilience Initiative, in which $2 million was split among 24 cross-border projects to preserve the Cali-Baja coast.
