Louis Hierholzer stands near Duisburg, Germany, on April 27, 1945, shortly after Allied forces secured the city in their final push into Nazi Germany. Just weeks earlier, American and British troops had encircled and crushed German resistance in the Ruhr Pocket, leading to the surrender of more than 300,000 Axis troops. By late April, Duisburg — a key industrial hub — was under Allied control as U.S. forces advanced eastward beyond the Rhine. Hierholzer, serving with the 216th Field Artillery Battalion of the 35th Infantry Division, was part of the effort to secure the region in the war’s closing days.
