The Arizona Diamondbacks set season highs with 14 runs on 21 hits, as they masked a suboptimal outing from Zac Gallen in a 14-8 victory against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Friday.
The D-backs just did not stop scoring, putting up runs in seven of nine innings as every starter in the lineup recorded a hit. They scored eight unanswered runs after falling behind 7-6.
Ketel Marte tied a career high with five RBIs and three extra-base hits. Eugenio Suarez blasted two home runs, reaching 300 for his illustrious career, on a four-hit night. Ildemaro Vargas, who had not received a plate appearance in nearly two weeks, finished a triple shy of the cycle.
Seven of their nine starters recorded multiple hits, and as a team Arizona smoked 12 balls over 100 mph. Remarkably, Arizona’s only strikeout of the game came in the ninth inning.
Most importantly, when the Rockies found life with a six-run fourth inning off Gallen, the Diamondbacks responded right away and did not let their division foes back in.
The elements were set up for an offensive showcase, as it was a warm evening at Coors Field with triple-digit temperatures before first pitch and the wind blowing out.
Right away, it was evident the Diamondbacks were on Rockies southpaw Austin Gomber. Marte led off the game with a double to right, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. singled him in. Jose Herrera hit an RBI double in the second, and Arizona rallied for four runs in the fourth, three on a Marte 449-foot blast to left field. Marte has back-to-back three-hit games.

Gallen, with a 6-1 lead and after getting through the first three innings with few issues, was pummeled in the fourth.
He allowed two home runs, two doubles and three singles, and one of the three outs was a 423-foot fly ball caught by a leaping Tim Tawa in center field. Almost every hit came on a center-cut pitch.
Gallen finished with five innings, seven earned runs on 10 hits, one walk and five strikeouts. His ERA increased to 5.60, the highest among 74 qualified pitchers in Major League Baseball.
Suarez tied the game back up with a lead-off solo shot in the fifth, and with two outs, Vargas crushed a ball 449 feet for the go-ahead two run home run off Gomber, who allowed nine runs. The Diamondbacks tacked on with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. In four straight innings, the D-backs scored multiple runs.
Friday marked the 11th game in MLB this season in which a team tallied at least 21 hits (three of which have come at Coors Field against the Rockies). The Diamondbacks fell one hit shy of tying their club single-game record.
Arizona’s defense was also terrific, minus Gurriel losing the ball in the lights during the eighth inning. Gurriel made two leaping catches to rob Colorado of base hits, Tawa’s grab may have saved Gallen another run and Suarez made a great bare-handed play on a slow-roller in the eighth.
Additionally, the bullpen (Juan Morillo, Jalen Beeks, Kyle Backhus and Kevin Ginkel) had a solid night with four innings and one earned run, which would not score if Gurriel caught that ball.
The D-backs are back over .500 at 38-37.
