Jamal Murray: Denver Nuggets guard breaks Canadian points record in NBA with 55 against Portland Trail Blazers

Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray used the fuel of a recent setback to break a Canadian record in the NBA on Wednesday night.

Murray, who helped Canada reach the Paris 2024 quarter-finals last year, had been ejected in the Nuggets’ previous game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday.

And just two days later, with the Nuggets facing the same opponent, Murray – born in Kitchener, Ontario – responded with a career-best 55 points in a 132-121 win.

The 55-point haul was a new NBA single-game record for a Canadian, with Murray narrowly eclipsing Paris 2024 teammate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored 54 points for the Oklahoma City Thunder less than a month ago.

Murray sank seven 3-pointers on his way to posting Denver’s third-best score in the franchise’s history, behind David Thompson’s 73 points in 1978 and the 56 points scored by current teammate Nikola Jokic in December.

“When he’s mad, there’s no one in the world that can stop him,” Nuggets forward Zeke Nnaji said, with Murray having been ejected for trash talk the game prior.

Murray himself added: “It’s just all competitive spirit. I came ready to play. Especially just being used to the playoffs and playing the same team over and over and they know your plays and things get chippy and you have to see them again. So, I think just that kind of factor made me ready to go. I was truly prepared today.”

The win also maintained the Nuggets’ hot streak, with an eighth straight victory the best current run in the NBA – they sit third in the Western Conference behind Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies.
