Zastryzny Outrighted, Pressly Not Quite Recruiting Bregman, Kershaw, Injuries, and Other Cubs Bullets

Took The Littlest Girl to Special Olympics basketball last night. We had fun. She wasn’t judged. I wasn’t judged. She simply got to be herself, welcomed by a community designed to support and include our family. Our experiences with Special Olympics have always been excellent, so if you ever have a chance to participate or volunteer, you should check it out.

The Cubs have outrighted lefty Rob Zastryzny at the conclusion of his DFA window, which means he went unclaimed on waivers. He now can decide whether to accept that outright to Iowa, decline it and sign with another team, or decline it and re-sign with the Cubs on a new deal (perhaps one with an opt-out built in). Given the relative lack of lefty options for the Cubs’ bullpen group in camp, here’s hoping they figure out a way to retain him. I get not keeping him on the 40-man as it started to get crowded given his lack of minor league options, but you really would like to still have him available. Ryan Pressly says he isn’t quite recruiting his former long-time teammate Alex Bregman to the Cubs, but he does stay in touch (Cubs.com): “I don’t think it’s recruiting. It’s just more of like, ‘Hey, how are you doing? What’re you hearing?’ Stuff like that. I don’t [need to] be like, ‘Hey, come here, come here.’ Would I like to play with him? 1,000% — I would love to play with him. But like I said, he’s got to make decisions for his family as well. Whatever decision he makes, I’m going to support him.” As for talking to the bosses about getting it done, Pressly said, “Jed’s got his hands full. I’m just trying to stay in my lane.” Need Dansby Swanson to be on Bug Jed duty.

“Just one of those guys that walks through the clubhouse and you just feel that aura around him where, ‘We got a chance today.’”Ryan Pressly on Alex Bregman. pic.twitter.com/lv1F8uOEj1

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 11, 2025 Juuuust kidding. They needed the additional infield depth on a minor league deal, and that’s why the Cubs signed Nicky Lopez. But if he can be another friend there to make the Cubs look just a touch more attractive to Bregman on a short-term deal, hey, no problem. Until and unless the Cubs add a more clear option to the roster, you can anticipate that Jon Berti will be the back-up at first base. I’m much less worried about the role than some other folks seem to be – if it’s a long-term Michael Busch injury, a true first base option can come up from the minors; if it’s short-term, whatever, Berti can play there a day or two or for a match-up – but I understand that it’s worth knowing how the Cubs would handle it. At long last, Clayton Kershaw reportedly has a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers to return for an 18th season with the Dodgers. The 37-year-old lefty made just 7 starts last year, the fewest of his career, and will aim to bounce back as part of a rotation that includes Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki, Shohei Ohtani, and three other guys and … God I hate them so much. A few NL Central injury notes, with new Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz in a cast after right wrist surgery (the timing and timeline are unclear), Reds outfielder Spencer Steer dealing with a sore shoulder that could limit him to DH for a while, and Reds pitching prospect Rhett Lowder slowed by a sore elbow. Also, re Horwitz, ouch:

damn. this sucks but at least this average first baseman wasn't the only addition the team made over the entire offseason ahead of a year in which they'll be paying paul skenes a total of 27 dollars. otherwise we would be screwed

    — The Setup Man – Chicago Cubs YT Channel (@SetupManKyle) February 11, 2025 With almost any other pitcher, I’d call BS, but with Greg Maddux, you know this is true:

Greg Maddux gave up a home run to Jeff Bagwell in a meaningless, blow out game…Why? To set him up for a HUGE strikeout months later. ?This man was playing 4D Chess while everyone else was playing checkers. ♟️? pic.twitter.com/N2znrURgWB
