For those for whom it may have slipped their mind the much-anticipated new season of Unforgotten is about to return to our screens.

The hit ITV crime show follows a fictional police team delving back into long-forgotten cold cases to solve murders shrouded in the mists of time.

Created and written by Chris Lang, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Sinéad Keenan star as the officers leading the investigations.

Season six starts when suspected human remains are uncovered on Whitney Marsh and analysis reveals the body was placed there already dismembered.

As the team probe ever deeper, they discover an outspoken television commentator, an Afghan refugee training for his UK citizenship test and a history lecturer at a London university all have a part to play in the case.

Season five of Unforgotten was the debut of a new DCI, Jessica James, following the death of DCI Cassie Stuart in season four.

The series focused on the discovery of the body of drug addict Precious Falade, which then led to a complicated web of lies and stolen identity.

At the heart of it was a rape which has had ramifications for three generations of a family.

The lives of the rape victim, her daughter, her granddaughter and two great-grandsons are all affected by it. And by the end of the season, only the daughter and one great grandson have survived.

DCI James and DI Sunny Khan have to learn to find a way to work together to discover what happened to Precious, her children and her grandmother.

It turns out powerful businessman Lord Tony Hume (Ian McElhinney) is at the centre of the whole story but a hidden witness is the key to revealing it all.

Hume is eventually caught for the murder of his great grandson Joseph when his other great grandson Jay comes forward as a witness.

But there is one final twist in this tale, Jay admits to his grandmother later that Hume didn’t actually kill Joseph. His death had been caused by an accident with a gun. But Jay wanted to see his great grandfather punished for the rape.

At the same time as solving the multiple crimes in the case, both DCI James and DI Khan are battling their own personal problems at home, with the breakdown of both their relationships.

Who is in the ‘Unforgotten’ season 6 cast?

Sanjeev Bhaskar returns to reprise his role as Detective Inspector Sunny Khan for the sixth season of the show.

The dedicated detective is second in command of the unit and is just adjusting to working with a new boss after his last Detective Chief Inspector died.

The British actor, comedian and writer rose to fame in the sketch show Goodness Gracious Me and was the star of the sitcom The Kumars at No. 42.

The 61-year-old has also played Kenny Gupta in Mumbai Calling, Prem Sharma in The Indian Doctor and Cain in The Sandman.

Sinéad Keenan

Sinéad Keenan stars as DCI Jessica James, who head up the cold case review team in London.

She has replaced the late DCI Cassie Stuart, who died following a car crash.

Actress Keenan, 47, started her television career as Farrah Phelan in the Irish soap opera Fair City.

She has gone on to play Kelly Hawkins in Moving Wallpaper, Nina Pickering in Being Human and Melanie Jones in Little Boy Blue, for which she won a Royal Television Society award.

Victoria Hamilton stars in this season of the show as Juliet Cooper, a history lecturer and faculty head at a London university.

The English actress began her career in theatre, winning the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for her performance in As You Like It in 2000.

She played the Queen Mother in the first two series of The Crown and recently appeared as Anna Marshall in the Sky political thriller COBRA.

MyAnna Buring

MyAnna Buring appears in this new season of Unforgotten as Melinda Ricci, an outspoken television commentator based in Ireland.

Swedish-born Buring is best known for playing Tanya Denali in The Twilight Saga films.

The 45-year-old played Lilly in the BBC series White Heat, Susan Hart in Ripper Street and Tissaia de Vries in The Witcher.

Although the offices for the cold case review team is based in London, each series sees the team sent out to different areas of the country.

Film crews returned to the Kent for season six of Unforgotten, season four had also been partly film in the county with Rochester then the focus.

This time the coastal town of Deal provided the backdrop for much of the filming.

Private homes in the quaint seaside resort as well as the pier and beach were used.

And both The Port Arms pub and St George’s Church have background roles in the show.

Filming also took place on the Leas in Kingsdown, just south of Deal.

How many episodes will season 6 have?

As with all previous seasons, there are six episodes in the new series of Unforgotten.

The first will debut on ITV on Sunday 9 February at 9pm, with the second on Monday 10 February at 9pm.

The remaining four episodes will be shown on successive Sundays and Mondays in the same time slot.
