(KRON) -- Workday has announced plans to cut 1,750 jobs. The cuts amount to 8.5% of the Pleasanton-based HR and employee management platform's total workforce.
According to an open letter from Workday CEO Carl Eschenbach addressed to "Workmates," the cuts are part of the company's drive toward artificial intelligence.
"Companies everywhere are reimagining how work gets done, and the increasing demand for AI has the potential to drive a new era of growth for Workday," Eschenbach wrote. "This creates a massive opportunity for us, but we need to make some changes to better align our resources with customers' evolving needs."
Google software engineer accused of stealing AI technology for ChinaWorkday, Eschenbach went on to say, has made the "difficult, but necessary, decision to eliminate approximately 1,750 positions, or 8.5% of our current workforce." The company, Eschenbach said, will start meeting with laid off employees "shortly," and hopes to connect with as many as possible Wednesday, "subject to local requirements where a consultation period is required."
"I realize this is tough news, and it effects all of us," the CEO continued, "the Workmates who are leaving and those who'll continue with us. I encourage you to work from home or head home, if you're already in the office."
Employees who've lost their jobs will be offered a minimum of 12 weeks pay, with additional weeks based on their tenure at the company. Additionally, they will receive vesting of restricted stock unit grants, career services, benefits support, and immigration support.
Workday employees outside the U.S. will be offered severance packages "based on local standards, which will be aligned with U.S. packages, where possible," the CEO said.
The Workday layoffs come one day after Salesforce reportedly cut 1,000 jobs. The Salesforce layoffs were also apparently part of a pivot toward AI, with the company also reportedly planning to hire more salespeople to sell its AI products.
