New NHL Players Poll Offers Interesting Results

On Wednesday morning The Athletic released the results of their informal, anonymous NHL player poll. They asked the usual range of questions, from coaches players would/would not want to play for, which cities would be on a no-trade list and whether or not Gary Bettman should retire from his role as commissioner of the NHL. And there were a few interesting results.

Here the ones that got my attention:

Ordinarily I would shrink this screengrab a little for the sake of it fitting better on the site (especially on mobile) but the real key here, to me, is in the fine print.

Other coaches who received votes among the 108 that responded: current interim Blackhawks head coach Anders Sorensen, former Blackhawks debacle Jeremy Colliton, former Blackhawks three-time Stanley Cup-winning and currently unemployed Joel Quenneville and… current University of Denver head coach David Carle. Hmm…. yeah, the guy I want the Blackhawks to hire as soon as his DU season ends.

John Tortorella received the most mentions (38.46 percent) to the “What coach would you least like to play for?” question. Bruce Cassidy ranked second (12.31 percent). Mike Babcock, who’s out of the league, caught strays from 7.69 percent of the 93 players who answered that question.

Of the 82 players who responded to the question “If you have a no-trade list, what’s the first team on it?” the No. 1 team by a mile is the Winnipeg Jets (48.78 percent). The Buffalo Sabres (19.51 percent) were second. The San Jose Sharks (8.54 percent) were the only other team over four percent of the responses. The Chicago Blackhawks were named once.

Carolina ran away as the NHL team with the worst facilities (65.71 percent). On the other hand, Detroit, Seattle and Edmonton were all over 20 percent of the response to the team with the best facilities for opposing teams.

Should Gary Bettman retire? 54.45 percent said yes.

And, finally, this one was interesting to me because both the NHL and the NHLPA are pushing for the return of the World Cup of Hockey (which would take place during the all-star break timeframe like the Olympics and this year’s 4 Nations Face-Off). Those scenarios take players away from their NHL teams and play country’s best vs. country’s best. But an in-season tournament like the NBA? The NHL players like it about as much as the fans do.
