United face Tottenham at the Estadio de San Mames in Bilbao on Wednesday night, live on talkSPORT.

Both Amorim and Ange Postecoglou arrive as under-fire managers as they both sit directly above the Premier League bottom three.

Postecoglou, whose Tottenham side are 17th in the table, in particular offered a strong response to speculation over his future during his spiky press conference appearance.

“I’m not a clown,” he told one reporter after their article headline said he is ‘teetering between hero and clown’.

Amorim’s attendance in front of the media appeared more relaxed and he even had time to joke about Fernandes’ future as a coach.

Another journalist asked: “Hi Ruben. Ange Postecoglou has just been in here answering questions about whether he might still be in his job, whatever the result tomorrow.

“Are you sort of surprised, grateful, that you don’t seem to be under the same kind of pressure, despite the fact that your team has a similar record?”

“He is,” Fernandes interjected, and then asked them: “Who told you he’s not? He is.”

“He wants my job,” Amorim said whilst laughing before backing his captain for success on the touchline in the future.

“He’ll be a very, very good coach, but he has to work on his mindset, he doesn’t know how to deal with people.”

Amorim joined United in November from Sporting Lisbon but has won just 16 of his 40 matches in charge across all competitions.

Much of his success has come in the Europa League, with the head coach yet to lose in any of his matches in the tournament.

However, Spurs could be difficult opposition and end that run as they have already beaten United three times this season.

Whilst domestic success has been limited, Amorim is optimistic that winning the Europa League will offer a huge boost for the future.

“Nothing is going to change our season,” he said. “Players know, everybody knows the stuff, the fans know.

“But winning a European title can help us to have that feeling that can help us to build [for] the future.”
