I probably could’ve put this one under the “Obsessive Alex Bregman Watch” banner, because there are clear implications for that story, too.
But, since the impacts to the NL Central and the Cardinals would be more immediate (and guaranteed) in the event of a Nolan Arenado trade, I focus on that part first:
The Red Sox and Cardinals have had recent communication about Nolan Arenado, source says. If the trade talks move forward, they could have implications for Alex Bregman's market. Of note, Cardinals exec Chaim Bloom has close knowledge of Boston's prospects.
— Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) February 4, 2025The Cardinals have obviously been trying to trade Arenado – and as much of his salary as possible – all offseason. They’ve done essentially nothing while waiting for that situation to shake out, but a combination of Arenado’s no-trade clause, Alex Bregman’s presence on the market, and the decline in Arenado’s performance have combined to make such a trade pretty challenging.
That said, you can see the obvious fit with the Red Sox, who could potentially squeeze the Cardinals just enough to make the trade return marginal and the dollars eaten substantial.
If that were to happen, then suddenly one of the other Bregman suitors would go away. That doesn’t mean the Cubs would become the favorite or anything, but it’s not clear Bregman wants to go to the Tigers or Blue Jays, and it’s not clear the Astros are even still trying to re-sign him. And if the Red Sox were out, that could leave the Cubs in a good spot to get Bregman on the atypical-kind-of-deal that would make sense for them and that he’d still accept (i.e., short-term, opt-out-heavy).
All that said, we have to pause just a bit. For one thing, we don’t know that these are actually serious, ongoing, and realistic trade talks between the Cardinals and Red Sox. For another thing, we don’t know to what extent this is getting out there specifically to put pressure on Bregman and Scott Boras. Maybe the Red Sox prefer Bregman, but want a resolution ASAP. Maybe the Astros want to push Bregman to accept a deal before he loses a potential landing spot in Boston (recall, they had themselves tried to trade for Arenado earlier this offseason). So on and so forth. These kinds of leaks always have multiple angles.
