It’s hard starting a business, but a new group is working to address that challenge in San Diego by connecting entrepreneurs with investors and providing them coaching to help grow their ventures.
FounderFuego was created to bridge the gap in bilingual resources and support for businesses and nonprofits, focusing especially on diverse clients.
“The name “Fuego,” means fire in Spanish, symbolizing passion, energy, and the drive to ignite change in the entrepreneurial landscape,” said founder and CEO Amber Tarrac. “The goal of FounderFuego is to provide bilingual mentorship and resources along with a supportive community for founders, enabling them to thrive and succeed.”
One way it is trying to do that is by arranging fireside chats about economic development issues.
The first one is being held Monday and is about grants that might be available to entrepreneurs. It is co-hosted by FounderFuego and the Better Business Bureau in partnership with the National City Chamber of Commerce and the National Latina Business Women Association of San Diego.
The event aims to provide entrepreneurs, investors, and industry professionals with a framework on where to start when it comes to grants. It will feature grant and innovation experts with insights and advice, and networking opportunities.
The event is 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Chase bank, 1130 E Plaza Blvd, National City. Information about the event is available at Fire Up Grants Fireside Chat.
“We plan to host more of these events to continue building our community,” said Tarrac.
The second event in the series is scheduled for March 4. That event will be co-hosted by FounderFuego, the Better Business Bureau, and the Chase Business “Coaching for Impact” program in partnership with the San Diego Tourism Authority and Village Up.
This event will build on the information shared in February by hosting a panel of entrepreneurs to discuss grant storytelling strategies and how to leverage AI for grant success.
In addition to those events, FounderFuego produces a newsletter and podcast and provides social media, marketing and outreach strategies. It offers coaching, seminars and workshops, and assistance with business negotiations. More information is available at FounderFuego.
FounderFuego’s initiative comes as corporate and government diversity, equity and inclusion efforts are under political attack.
“In a time when DEI is facing challenges, FounderFuego aims to elevate the conversation by advocating for inclusive practices and highlighting the importance of creating an innovation and entrepreneurship economy for all,” said Tarrac. “We are uniting with our community partners to build a coalition, and we invite the community to join us in advancing this mission.”
Tarrac started the business in October 2023 after having worked in the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development. She also served as the Economic Development Assistant Director for the city of Miami Beach and worked for the County of San Diego.
