A search is underway Sunday for a man who walked away from the San Diego County Male Community Reentry Program, authorities said Sunday.
On Saturday, at 7:26 p.m., officials were alerted that incarcerated person Freddy Rojas, 37, had walked out of an MCRP facility, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation reported.
A correctional officer said Rojas walked out the front door without authorization.
An emergency count confirmed that Rojas was missing, department officials said.
The department’s Office of Correctional Safety and local law enforcement agencies have been notified and are assisting in the search.
Rojas is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 211 pounds. He has brown eyes, is bald and was last seen wearing dark grey shorts and a black shirt with white lettering.
On May 31, 2023, Rojas was sentenced to 7 years in state prison for possession of a controlled substance and sale, with an enhancement for being armed with a firearm as a second striker.
MCRP allows eligible offenders to serve the end of their sentence in the re-entry center and provides them with the tools necessary to transition from custody to the community.
It is a voluntary program for male offenders who have two years or less left to serve.
The program links offenders to a range of community-based rehabilitative services that assist with substance use disorders, mental health care, medical care, employment, education, housing, family reunification and social support.
Since 1977, of the people who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission, 99% have been apprehended.
