The Regency Theatres off Sunflower Avenue in Santa Ana near South Coast Plaza, has shuttered its doors, thanking years of moviegoers with a message on its marquee.
The Segerstrom family, developers of South Coast Plaza across Sunflower, are proposing a redevelopment of their South Coast Plaza Village, and the theater property is included in that vision, according to documents filed with the city and posted online.

ExpandRepresentatives of Regency Theaters, nor the Segerstrom family, could not be reached with questions about the theater’s closing or the timing with the proposed development. Regency Theaters has other Orange County locations in Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano and Westminster as well as the Los Angeles area and Inland Empire.
The Village Santa Ana, proposed for 17.2 acres at Sunflower Avenue and Bear Street, calls for more than 1,500 residential units, office and retail space, and more than 3 acres of open space available to the public.
Across from the South Coast Plaza and near the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the South Coast Plaza Village has seen little change in recent years. It featured some 70 shops and restaurants when it opened in 1973.
The Village Santa Ana proposal still needs approval from the city, it is in the development project review stage according to the latest update on the city’s website in September. No upcoming meetings are listed.
Some fans of the movie theater took to Facebook to express their sadness that it was closing down. It would screen new releases, but also classics on Wednesdays.
“This is so disappointing, that theater is such a gem and is really one of a kind in the area,” one commenter said.
“Easy parking, close, great seats, very reasonable price, and not just old movies. They have shown so many good movies. Very sad,” another Facebook user shared.
The theater backs up to another shopping center that is soon to undergo a transformative development.

Related Bristol was approved by the Santa Ana City Council last October, and groundbreaking is anticipated in early 2026.
