The matchup for Super Bowl LIX is set. In two weeks, the Kansas City Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch of Super Bowl LVII in New Orleans, Louisiana. In today’s NFL Notes, we discuss the conference championship games that set that matchup and more.
AFC Championship: Chiefs 32, Bills 29
Sunday’s main event was the AFC Championship between Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills and Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. The game lived up to the billing, with the Chiefs and Bills trading punches for four quarters, but in the end, it produced the same outcome for the Bills, who have run into that Kansas City roadblock a few times in the past half-decade.
After the game, a somber Josh Allen said that to be the champions, you have to beat the champions, and Allen and the Bills were unable to do that on Sunday. Allen threw for 237 yards and two scores in the losing effort and running back James Cook rushed for 85 yards and two scores on 13 carries.
The Chiefs sealed their trip to New Orleans with this fourth-down stop, which featured a terrific blitz from defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and some near magic from Josh Allen, had Dalton Kincaid secured the catch on the other end.

If Kincaid secures that catch, we might be talking about the Buffalo Bills preparing to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans in two weeks.
NFC Championship: Eagles 55, Commanders 23
Unlike the AFC title game, there was never a doubt in Philadelphia, where the Eagles blasted their NFC East rivals 55-23 at Lincoln Financial Field. The Philadelphia Eagles are returning to the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons.
Despite a strong start from rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who led an impressive opening drive for a field goal, the Eagles quickly responded with an explosive one-play, 18-second touchdown run by Saquon Barkley. In his standout debut season with Philadelphia, Barkley scored three touchdowns and powered the Eagles’ commanding performance.
Daniels’ remarkable rookie campaign ends with Washington achieving its best season since 1991, including its first playoff win in two decades, bringing renewed hope to the franchise. Meanwhile, the Eagles prepare for a Super Bowl rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs, fueled by their dynamic offense and Barkley’s game-changing presence.

Despite receiving plenty of interest in this year’s head coaching candidate cycle, ESPN reports that Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken will be sticking around in Baltimore with a new contract extension likely to include a raise.
The only head coaching job that remains open is with the New Orleans Saints, but the Saints will be looking elsewhere for a head coach. Over the past two years in Baltimore, Monken has helped Lamar Jackson become the most prolific version of himself, and he and Jackson will have a third season together.
Speaking of New Orleans’ head coaching search, the Saints pool of potential candidates has dwindled over the past week, with other clubs making hires. New Orleans has completed in-person interviews with only interim head coach Darren Rizzi. New Orleans has interviewed Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver, Bills OC Joe Brady, Giants OC Mike Kafka, and Eagles OC Kellen Moore virtually and has requested to interview Mike McCarthy and Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury.
With the Bills and Commanders eliminated from the playoffs, New Orleans could talk to Brady and Kingsbury again as soon as today.
It Sounds Like It’s Going to be Russell Wilson OR Justin Fields Next Season in Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II spoke to the media today in Pittsburgh. Regarding the quarterback situation, it sounds as though either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields will be the starter next season, but not both. Rooney made it clear that he desires a quarterback on a long-term deal to provide the franchise with some stability under center.
“I think they’re both capable quarterbacks, and my preference would be to sign one of them, so that’ll be the priority, and I think that will give us the best opportunity to move forward,” Rooney said (via Brooke Pryor).
Justin Fields started the first six games of the season while Wilson worked his way back from a preseason injury and led Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record before being replaced by Wilson once he was 100 percent healthy. Even with Pittsburgh’s offense disappearing in the season’s final weeks, head coach Mike Tomlin stuck with Wilson at quarterback.
Fields threw for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception and was sacked 16 times during his six starts for the Steelers. Wilson threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions in his 11 starts for the Steelers.
