VIDEO game giants Electronic Arts has taken a dramatic tumble on the stock market.
The publishers of the popular Madden series saw its worst one-day stock performance since 2008 on Thursday.
EA Sports had 17 per cent wiped off its share value in a single day.
On Friday, it tumbled another 1.7 per cent ahead of the company’s full third-quarter earnings report due in early February.
EA has held the rights to make an exclusive NFL game since 2004.
They release editions of Madden annually, usually weeks before the start of each new season.
This year also saw the release of College Football 25, which quickly became the best-selling sports video game in US history.
But the underperformance of EA Sports FC – the company’s annual soccer game – has seemingly prompted the share tumble.
EA was reportedly “caught off guard by the shortfall and isn’t certain about how to address it,” Wedbush analysts revealed, via Front Office Sports.
The company now expects “net bookings of approximately $2.215 billion for the third fiscal quarter and an updated range of $7 billion to $7.15 billion for fiscal year 2025”.
“During Q3, we continued to deliver high-quality games and experiences across our portfolio,” said Andrew Wilson, CEO of EA.
“However, Dragon Age and EA SPORTS FC 25 underperformed our net bookings expectations.
“This month, our teams delivered a comprehensive gameplay refresh in addition to our annual Team of the Year update in FC 25.
“Positive player feedback and early results are encouraging.
“We remain confident in our long-term strategy and expect a return to growth in FY26, as we execute against our pipeline.”
Madden 26, the next edition in the series, is pencilled in for an August release.
There is a three-day early release expected for those who pre-order the deluxe edition of the game.
Fans are eagerly awaiting to find out who will be the 2025 cover star.
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey featured on last year’s cover.
But McCaffrey succumbed to the so-called “Madden curse”, where cover stars are either injured shortly after the season starts or fail to win a Super Bowl.
Recent stars featured include Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Tom Brady.
