ExpandThe Centurions are now 2-3 in the five-team league that delivers close games and dramatic finishes night after night. The Centurions beat Foothill on Friday, 72-65, for their first league win.
La Habra, which started 2-0 in league, lost its third consecutive league game and also is 2-3 in league.
Four Crestview League teams are in the Top 10 in this week’s Orange County rankings: No. 5 Crean Lutheran, No. 6 Canyon, No. 9 Foothill and No. 10 La Habra. Cypress is at No. 11.
The lead in the fourth quarter went back and forth between the two teams. La Habra had a 63-60 lead with 45 seconds to go.
Cypress junior forward Gavin Kroll scored off an offensive rebound with 24 seconds remaining to make it 63-62.
Cypress junior point guard Ryan Gov came up with a steal and was fouled, and after a couple of La Habra intentional fouls the Centurions were able to work the ball around to Roberts for his 3-pointer that was launched slightly to the left of the top of the key, giving Cypress a 65-63 lead with four seconds left.
After a couple of Cypress fouls took two seconds off of the clock, La Habra could not get off a shot as time expired.
Cypress coach Derek Mitchell said Roberts was dealing with leg cramps during Tuesday’s game and had to sit out briefly.
“I told him, ‘When you come back you’d better have your legs,’” Mitchell said. “And he did.”
La Habra junior point guard Acen Jimenez scored 24 points, including all of the Highlanders’ seven second-quarter points, with four assists. He went into the game averaging 22 points and four assists a game.
Highlanders junior forward Baylor Wilks scored 13 points, three more than his per-game average. Senior forward Christian Howlin grabbed five rebounds for La Habra, which is 18-7 overall.
Gov led Cypress (16-9) with 14 points and four assists and surpassed 1,000 career points Tuesday. He went into Tuesday’s game averaging 25 points in league games.
Centurions senior guard King Birdsong scored 13 points with three 3-pointers, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Roberts scored 13 points with five rebounds and Kroll scored 10 points.
Cypress busted out to an 8-0 lead. Jimenez rallied the Highlanders, scoring seven points in the first quarter that ended in a 17-17 tie. The Centurions outscored La Habra 19-7 in the second quarter for a 36-24 halftime lead.
La Habra, a CIF Southern Section champion last season, outscored Cypress 23-14 in the third quarter to cut the Centurions’ advantage to 50-47, setting the scene for another close game.
“Every game it feels like we lost at the last second,” Gov said. “But Hayden came up big with that shot. That was huge.”
La Habra plays at Crean Lutheran on Friday, Jan. 24. The Highlanders beat Crean Lutheran 56-55 on a buzzer-beating jump shot by Jimenez two weeks ago in the league opener for both.
Cypress plays at Canyon on Friday, Jan. 24. The Centurions lost to Canyon 63-61 in double overtime in their first meeting.
Also in the Crestview League on Tuesday:
No. 6 Canyon 73, No. 9 Foothill 65: Brandon Benjamin scored 36 points at Canyon and surpassed 2,000 career points as a Canyon basketball player.
Canyon is 18-6 overall and 3-1 in league. Foothill is 14-9 overall, 1-3 in league.
