User Experience
The Govee TV Backlight 3 Lite comes in a standard Govee box. The front of the box features an image from Dune Part Two on the front and emblems that indicate that it’s compatible with Google Home and Alexa. While some Govee products are compatible with Matter, this one is not. The light strip comes with a camera, control box, instructions, power cable/adapter, and installation clips. It also comes with foam stickers to assist with calibration of the camera.
The set up process was straightforward and I really only ran into issues in two places. First, when I was trying to mount the camera, it’s not really designed for super thin TVs. My television (LG OLED83C4PUA) has a maximum width of 2.2 inches without its stand. The screen itself is not that deep and the camera has trouble staying in one place. I tried using the adhesive that was included to keep it stationary but it still teeters back and forth.
The second issue I had was actually getting it paired to the phone/app. The app was recognizing the light strip, but not the camera and controller. We kept getting this error message:
We detected that your strip light camera has not been installed or initialized. Therefore, Wi-Fi control and video function will be unavailable.
Based on the size of our TV and the placement of the control box, we attempted to use a longer USB-C cable then was provided with the camera. I ended up using the provided USB-C cable and adjusted where the control box was located. I also realized that my phone wasn’t connected to our 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network. Our wireless network is tri-band and I usually remain connected to the 5Ghz network. Once I switched over to the 2.4Ghz network (the only band the Govee strip is compatible with) and had the right USB-C cable in use, everything connected.
I was a little nervous about using the foam squares for calibration of the camera since they have to be stuck to your TV. I discovered that the adhesive is very mild and doesn’t leave any residue so I was able to do the calibration step and pull the squares off without any trouble.
Once it was all set up, the lighting setup works really well and accentuates what is playing on the TV well. We have tried other immersive systems before that don’t require a camera, but the issue with those is that they do require that you route your visual signal through its control box. This means that you can’t get the full resolution you want — you are stuck with what that system can provide. We wanted to make sure the TV was providing the highest quality visual as possible. So the Govee backlight was a great solution for this.
I really love all the different color combinations you can program into the light strip. It’s a great option for when you aren’t watching something on your screen. So far, I haven’t seen the adhesive on the strip failing and it all seems to be very secure. I really feel like the Govee TV Backlight 3 Lite adds a lot to our home theater and really adds a unique level of depth to viewing experiences.
Conclusion
The Govee TV Backlight 3 Lite elevates the home entertainment experience with its vibrant, customizable lighting and smart features. While it excels in syncing lights with on-screen action and providing a dynamic ambiance, minor issues with installation on ultra-thin TVs and network compatibility may require some troubleshooting. Despite these setbacks, the overall functionality and quality of the product make it a worthwhile addition to your smart home ecosystem.
