Everything we know about the Switch 2 with official reveals from Nintendo

IN May the internet was broken after Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa officially announced a successor to the Nintendo Switch.

In a tweet, Furukawa-san revealed that the console people colloquially call the Switch 2 is officially in development and will be revealed shortly.

If you can’t wait to upgrade your Nintendo console, here’s everything you need to know about the Switch 2.

When is the Switch 2’s reveal date?

The Switch 2 was first revealed in a two-minute teaser trailer titled “An update from Nintendo”.

It showed off the new console’s design as well as features and Joy-Con.

The trailer also featured a new Mario Kart game teaser trailer.

A full announcement will be made in a Nintendo Direct taking place on April 2, 2025.

When is the Switch 2’s release date?

Nintendo hasn’t even hinted at a release date for the Nintendo Switch, but we do know that the company often launches consoles shortly after their reveal.

With Nintendo Direct taking place in April, we expect to be able to purchase a Switch 2 around mid to late 2025.

Will Switch 2 have backwards compatibility?

Yes! Nintendo has officially announced that the Switch 2 will have full backwards compatibility with Switch games.

This means it will be able to play both digital and physical Switch games, as well as be able to use the Switch Online library.

We also know that digital purchases made on the Switch will be carried over onto the Switch 2.

What features will the Switch 2 have?

Beyond backwards compatibility, the Switch 2 will have USB-C ports on the top and bottom of the console.

This means that you will be able to charge the console far more easily as you play.

The screen is much larger than the original Switch’s and looks to be around 8″.

Joy-Con will connect to the console magnetically, and also appear to have an optical sensor.

The trailer showed the Joy-Con being used like a computer mouse, suggesting there will be another way to control the game.

Switch 2’s functionality is similar to the Switch’s and can be played in handheld, tabletop, and TV mode.

How powerful will the Switch 2 be?

Technical specifications are also yet to be officially announced, but again we have some notable leaks and rumours to look at.

It is believed that it will feature a 1080p screen, though it is unlikely to be OLED like the most recent version of the Switch.

It is rumoured from supposed images of the motherboard to be almost as powerful of the PS4 Pro.

However, this information isn’t as reliable as other rumours as the original source is unknown.
