The Chicago Bears will have a new head coach in 2025. And like the team that fired Matt Eberflus on Black Friday, we’re getting an early start on the search with this series that will profile potential head coaches for the franchise that resides at Halas Hall.
Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator and former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith is another name on the long list of potential hires that will get some face time with the Chicago Bears brass.

Arthur Smith, a 16-year NFL coaching veteran, began his first season as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive coordinator in 2024, following a three-year tenure as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons (2021-23).
During his time with Atlanta, Smith led the Falcons to notable achievements, including ranking first in fewest penalties and third in rushing yards per game in 2022. Under his guidance, rookies Bijan Robinson and Drake London set franchise records, with Robinson amassing 1,463 scrimmage yards—the most by a rookie in team history—and London posting 72 receptions in 2022. Smith also unlocked the potential of tight ends Kyle Pitts and Jonnu Smith, making Atlanta one of the few teams with two tight ends surpassing 500 receiving yards in the same season.
Before his time in Atlanta, Smith earned acclaim as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans (2019-20) under fellow Bears head coaching candidate Mike Vrabel. In 2020, the Titans ranked among the league’s best in total offense, red-zone efficiency, and rushing yards, fueled by Derrick Henry’s historic 2,027-yard rushing season. Smith also rejuvenated quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s career, helping him achieve Pro Bowl honors and the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award in 2019.
Smith’s coaching career began with the Washington football franchise in 2007 and included a decade with the Titans, where he rose through the ranks. His ability to adapt his schemes to maximize his players’ strengths and foster development makes him a key asset for the Steelers as they aim to revitalize their offense in 2024.
© Eric Hartline-Imagn ImagesHow does Arthur Smith fit (or not) the Chicago Bears’ plans in 2025 and beyond?
Arthur Smith might be the first candidate in this series on whom I’m absolutely unable to spin some positive thoughts. Outside of him being of an offensive background, I see no fit here. His time in Atlanta as a head coach was recent and lackluster. Spending a season working under Mike Tomlin is undoubtedly a plus. Still, I’m not even close to being convinced it is enough to make Smith a head coaching candidate during this hiring cycle, not only for the Bears, but for anyone. There are too many better names from all the coaching archetypes.
One Big Question
How much value should we place in his year working with Mike Tomlin?
Like I said, it’s a plus, but it’s not enough for me. I felt similar about Kliff Kingsbury’s one-year apprenticeship with Dan Quinn in D.C. I feel even stronger that it’s not enough for Smith to get a second bite at the apple than I did with Kingsbury.
