The High-Speed Flash Drive You Can Rely On

I’ve been working remotely for close to five years now and I like to keep dependable digital storage options at the ready. While my primary machine is a MacBook Pro and its only Input/Output ports are USB-C, I’ve found that it’s very beneficial for me to keep a USB-A flash drive handy. They are robust and are typically universally accepted with other devices such as printers. PNY has been one of my ‘go-to’ brands for quite some time and the PNY PRO Elite V3 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Flash Drive is the ultimate remote working companion. Plus it makes a great pairing with the PNY Elite-X Type-C USB 3.2 Flash Drive.

    Pricing & Availability

The PRO Elite V3 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Flash Drive is available in three capacities — 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. The flash drive has a price range between $34.99 to $104.99 depending on capacity. It’s also available on Amazon at the time of publishing for $31.99-$84.99.

    User Experience

The PRO Elite flash drive comes in standard flash drive packaging. It’s a cardboard backing with a plastic compartment for the flash drive. The device is well-identified on the front of the package and the back provides a lot of specifications and details about the flash drive. The print is very small, but since the device is small, I don’t really see how they could have provided more legible details.

I love the all-metal body of this flash drive. Since a lot of flash drives has plastic bodies, this makes the PRO Elite feel more ‘professional’ and exclusive than those other options. This flash drive features the slide-out design where the connector is covered by the body of the flash drive when its not in use. There is a lanyard loop included on the body of the device, but no lanyard was included with it.

I always like to run a digital storage device through its paces by completing three different tests.

Blackmagic Disk Speed Test AmorphousDiskMark Real-time Drag-and-Drop Timed Test

The PRO Elite flash drive comes pre-formatted as ExFAT, which means that it is cross-platform compatible and it supports larger file sizes than FAT32 does. Since it worked with my macOS system out of the package, I didn’t worry about reformatting it before completing these tests.

Blackmagic Disk Speed Test: This is a free benchmarking tool designed to measure the performance of storage devices, such as internal drives, external drives, and RAID arrays. Created by Blackmagic Design, it is especially popular among video professionals for evaluating if their storage can handle high-resolution video formats and workflows.

The PNY PRO Elite V3 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Flash Drive had a write speed of 826.3 MB/s and read speed of 632.5 MB/s. The specs state that the maximum read/write speeds of the flash drive are 1000 MB/s and 800 MB/s respectively. Even though my test was slightly lower than those maximum specs, I believe that I probably lost some transfer speed since I had to pass the data stream though a USB hub. As I mentioned, my MacBook Pro only has USB-C ports so I had to utilize the Satechi USB4 Multiport Adapter to connect the flash drive. Even though this particular hub has USB-A 3.2 ports on it, there is always the possibility that some speed was lost in the connection process.

AmorphousDiskMark Test: This is a disk benchmarking tool for macOS designed to measure the performance of storage devices, such as SSDs, HDDs, and external drives. Inspired by the popular CrystalDiskMark for Windows, it provides detailed insights into the speed of a device through various types of tests.

With this test, the read speed was 707.59 MB/s and the write speed was 925.91 MB/s. This was much closer to the published specs. So, I would classify those specs as accurate after running both of these benchmarking tests.

Drag-n-Drop Test: In addition to running utility app tests, I perform a practical assessment to measure real-world file transfer speeds. Using a stopwatch, I time how long it takes to copy a specific file or folder to the hard drive. Then, I calculate the transfer rate by dividing the file size by the elapsed time. This method offers an accurate reflection of real-world data transfer performance. The file I transferred was 3.85GB in size and contained a variety of file types including images and video. The transfer took 16.31 seconds. That calcluates to a transfer rate of approximately 241.72 MB/s.

    Conclusion

The PNY PRO Elite V3 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Flash Drive is a robust and reliable storage solution that combines impressive performance, sleek design, and cross-platform compatibility. Its overall performance aligns closely with its advertised specifications and it caters well to the needs of remote workers, gamers, and tech-savvy professionals. Whether you’re dealing with high-resolution videos or large software files, this drive is an exceptional choice for fast and dependable data storage.

¹For Flash Media Devices, 1 megabyte = 1 million bytes; 1 gigabyte = 1 billion bytes. Actual useable capacity may be less than total listed (some capacity is used for formatting and other functions, and thus is not available for data storage).

²Noted speed requires USB 3.2 Gen 2 devices (speed may be lower with earlier generation host devices).  Speed comparison is vs PNY USB 2.0 (3MB/s) write speed. Performance and  photo/video support (eg, “full HD”) may vary depending on the host devices, user’s settings and configurations.
