The 53-year-old victim surnamed Leung and two other workers were lowering the panel measuring 2.5m by 2m when one of its straps snapped, South China Morning Post reports.
Leung, wearing a safety helmet, had placed himself under the panel when it fell.
Coworkers used a forklift to move the panel off Leung, who was unconscious.
An ambulance crew took him to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A source told the Post that Leung had over 10 years experience and had been working at the site for six months.
The accident happened at a Sun Hung Kai Properties-developed site.
A company spokesman told the Post that Leung had been employed with a subcontractor and all construction at the site had been halted to review safety measures.
“We are fully cooperating with police and the relevant authorities in their investigations and will provide appropriate assistance to the family of the deceased,” he said.
