NFL’S Black Monday has officially begun – and Doug Pederson has been the first victim of the brutal day for head coaches.
The Jacksonville Jaguars announced the firing of Pederson early Monday morning as the move was made after the New England Patriots fired Jerod Mayo following their Week 18 win on Sunday.
Jacksonville fired Peterson but surprisingly retained general manager Trent Baalke after the team finished 4-13 this season.
Peterson spent three seasons with the Jaguars, going 22-29 and losing 18 of its past 23 games.
He did lead the franchise to two 9-8 records in his first two seasons, including helping win the AFC South in 2022.
However, last season, Jacksonville collapsed after an 8-2 start, going 1-5 in the final six games and missing the playoffs.
Those struggles only continued into 2024 as the Jaguars had one of the worst offenses and defenses in the NFL.
Peterson was the first head coach to be fired in the 2025 edition of Black Monday, and he likely won’t be the only one.
There has been speculation that Las Vegas Raiders’ Antonio Pierce and Dallas Cowboys‘ Mike McCarthy could lose their jobs.
However, there are already four teams that have vacancies with their head coach positions after Week 18 wrapped up on Sunday: The New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, and Patriots.
The latter organization turned heads with the firing of Mayo after he was the head coach for just one season.
New England finished the season 4-13, and the expectation from around the league is that they will position themselves for candidate Mike Vrabel – a Patriots Hall of Famer and former Tennesee Titans head coach.
