Local Government Meetings: January 6-10, 2025

This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.

With the holiday season still wrapping up, it’s a light week for local government. But there are a handful of local boards reconvening in the coming days – especially in Durham, where the City Council will tackle deer hunting, county commissioners will hear from the public on a five-year housing plan, and the school board will move to address a bus driver shortage. Elsewhere, Chatham County Commissioners head into a three-day budget retreat, and the Carrboro Town Council will continue hearing from the public on a proposed subdivision on Homestead Road.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Only one meeting in Orange County this week: the Carrboro Town Council is convening at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 7. They only have two agenda items: council members will get an update on race and equity initiatives from the past year, and they’ll continue a public hearing on a proposed housing subdivision at 904 Homestead Road. Chatham County Commissioners are holding a three-day budget retreat this week, starting Tuesday, January 7, and running through Thursday the 9th. Commissioners will discuss their goals and priorities for the coming fiscal year; they’ll hear presentations from various county departments; they’ll receive details about the expected conditions affecting next year’s budget, including tax revenue, inflation, and the general state of the economy; and they’ll provide staff with guidance and suggestions as they begin preparing a budget draft. In Durham, the City Council meets twice this week, first at 7 p.m. Monday, January 6, and then again at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 9. Monday’s agenda is a short one, with a vote scheduled on proposed changes to the city’s deer bow hunting ordinance. Then at Thursday’s work session, council members will hold a public hearing on a proposed five-year plan for housing and community development needs; they’ll also seek public comment on a handful of rezoning proposals. Get links to both agendas here.

Durham County Commissioners meet at 9 a.m. Monday, January 6. Commissioners will get an update on a proposed new 10,000-square-foot training facility for the sheriff’s office, and they’ll hear a presentation on the county’s property tax reappraisal, which took effect on January 1. Finally, the Durham school board has a special meeting at 5 p.m. Monday, January 6, with one agenda item: board members will consider approving new transportation plans, to help address an ongoing bus-driver shortage. Click here for the full agenda.
