Sept. 4: New courthouse renderings posted. Nine more renderings of the planned $150 million Mendocino County Courthouse in Ukiah have been publicly posted by the state Judicial Council of California, which is overseeing the controversial project.

Sept. 5: Body found near lake. The body of a young woman was found near Lake Mendocino Sunday, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

    Sept. 6: City ‘dissatisfied’ with Palace. City officials reported being displeased with the progress, or rather lack thereof, being made regarding downtown Ukiah’s most talked-about building for decades, the Palace Hotel.

    Sept. 7: 900 marijuana plants found. Two men were arrested at the site of an illegal marijuana operation in northern Mendocino County that also involved an illegal water diversion, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

    Sept. 8: Homeless in Ukiah: Where can they be? Adam Gaska is tired of telling people where they can’t be. Nearly every day as part of his work managing properties in Ukiah, he is tasked with removing trespassers and cleaning up encampments.

    Sept. 10: Chili cookoff. On Friday, Sept. 6, Granite Construction hosted the 26th annual Chili Cookoff in Alex Thomas Jr. Plaza in downtown Ukiah.

    Sept. 11: PG&E surveys equipment for risks. Pacific Gas and Electric recently completed surveys of its equipment in Mendocino County using low-flying helicopters in an effort to reduce wildfire risks, the utility reported.

    Sept. 12: Man arrested after approaching teens. A Laytonville man jailed after approaching two Ukiah girls in March has been arrested twice since his release, first after he reportedly followed a woman jogging, then again after he allegedly got into a car with two 16-year-olds, the Ukiah Police Department reported.

    Sept. 13: Retirements affecting judicial assignments. Mendocino County Superior Court will soon have two judicial vacancies due to retirements, and is therefore “reorganizing the workload to accommodate these changes,” court officials announced.

    Sept. 14: Group speaks out on homeless. A recently formed group of frustrated property and business owners addressed the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors Tuesday to request they take more action to protect residents from the costs and damage inflicted by what one member described as the “Homeless Industrial Complex.”

    Sept. 15:  Hispanic heritage celebration at SPACE. For several years, the community has come together to celebrate Hispanic Heritage.

    Sept. 17: Johnson sentenced to 15 years. The man found guilty of setting the Hopkins Fire, which destroyed about 30 homes in Calpella three years ago, was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison, Mendocino County District Attorney David Eyster reported from the Marin County Civic Center in Santa Rosa.

    Sept. 18: Man dies in E-bike crash. A Ukiah man was killed recently after crashing the E-bike he was riding at an “extremely high rate of speed,” the Ukiah Police Department reported.

    Sept. 19:  Historic Preservation Ordinance. As part of its work updating the city’s Historic Resources Survey, city of Ukiah staff are working with personnel from the Historical Society of Mendocino County to draft a Historic Preservation Ordinance.

    Sept. 20: Hundreds more trees approved. The city of Ukiah is poised to receive more than a million dollars to launch a three-year program focused on planting hundreds of new trees on public and private property.

    Sept. 21: Fort Bragg man sentenced to life. A Fort Bragg man was sentenced to life in prison this week after being convicted of multiple counts of sexual misconduct with multiple young children, the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office reported.

    Sept. 22: Redwood Elementary School projects. Redwood Elementary School, which educates Fort Bragg students ranging from pre-school (TK) to Grade 2, has two ongoing construction projects, a remodeling of the office hallway and the construction of a stand-alone, four-classroom building.

    Sept. 24: Psilocybin mushrooms seized. A Willits man was arrested with more than a pound of psilocybin mushrooms after calling police to report that his girlfriend pointed a gun at him, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

    Sept. 25: Nearly 7,500 pot plants seized. Three people were detained and nearly 7,500 marijuana plants destroyed during raids of five properties in northern Mendocino County last week, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reported.

    Sept. 26: Graffiti suspect arrested. A Redwood Valley man was arrested on suspicion of  vandalism after allegedly tagging three downtown businesses with graffiti shortly after being released from Mendocino County Jail, the Ukiah Police Department reported.

    Sept. 27: Teens arrested for alleged car burglaries. Two Ukiah teens were arrested this week with knives after reportedly trying to evading officers following reported car burglaries, the Ukiah Police Department reported.

    Sept. 28: Ukiah carjacking suspect convicted. A Ukiah man was convicted this week of “three violent felonies” connected to one carjacking and two attempted carjackings in Ukiah, the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office reported.

    Sept. 29:  Cubbison defense moves to have case tossed. A newly filed motion to dismiss felony charges against suspended Mendocino County Auditor Chamise Cubbison and fired county Payroll Manager Paula June Kennedy outlines a chaotic criminal case that remains stalled a year after its filing.

    Oct. 1: Ukiah Valley creeks cleaned of trash. Dozens of truckloads full of garbage were cleaned from multiple creek beds in the Ukiah Valley Saturday during the annual Russian River Cleanup.

    Oct. 2: MCSO, UPD hire new personnel. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and the Ukiah Police Department recently introduced newly hired law enforcement personnel to the community.

    Oct. 4: ‘Missing middle housing’ discussed. In an effort to add more of what city planners describe as “Missing Middle Housing,” the Ukiah City Council Wednesday approved introducing an ordinance making changes to the Ukiah City Code that are intended to encourage the creation of homes designed to accommodate more than one family.

    Oct. 5: Ukiah woman convicted of repeat DUI. A Ukiah woman previously convicted twice of driving under the influence in Lake County was recently found guilty a third time, the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office reported.

    Oct. 9: 30,482 marijuana plants seized. More than 23,000 pounds of processed marijuana and more than 30,000 plants were seized recently from unlicensed cannabis operations in the Round Valley area, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

    Oct. 10: Escaped campfire leads to arrest. A Ukiah man was arrested on suspicion of “reckless burning” Sunday after a campfire built in Ackerman Creek escaped and burned nearby forest land, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

    Oct. 12: Agencies collaborate to address climate migration. At a meeting hosted by the Grass Roots Institute, multiple agencies responsible for housing and planning for sea level rise came together to understand the scope of climate migration and the types of impacts that they need to prepare for.

    Oct. 13: Save the Redwoods League acquires 750 acres. Save the Redwoods League announced that it has purchased three coast redwood properties totaling 750 acres in Sonoma and Mendocino counties that will one day be added to Armstrong Redwoods and Montgomery Woods state natural reserves (SNR).

    Oct. 15: Mendocino College announces new role. Mendocino College recently announced the appointment of Nicole Marin as the new Vice President of Administrative Affairs .following the retirement of Eileen Cichocki.

    Oct. 17: A weekend of community celebration downtown. The Ukiah Country Pumpkinfest returns to downtown this weekend, with an “Alice in Wonderland” 2024 theme of “Down the Rabbit Hole.”

    Oct. 18: Contractor secures title to Palace. Tom Carter, a longtime North Coast contractor with experience in turning old buildings into new uses, said Wednesday he has secured title to the Palace Hotel, the historic downtown Ukiah landmark.

    Oct. 19: Trustees Ford, Duncan step down. This year, the Mendocino County Board of Education bids farewell to two dedicated trustees who have made lasting contributions to the county’s educational community.

    Oct. 20:­­ Winning pumpkin weighs 527 pounds. The Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off was held in Ukiah Friday night in downtown Ukiah. The winning pumpkin of 527 pounds was from the Harrison family.

    Oct. 22: St. Mary of the Angels Catholic school hosts winter coat drive. As the colder months approach, St. Mary of the Angels Catholic School is stepping up to support those in need by hosting a Winter Coat Drive under the theme “Coats of Compassion.”

    Oct. 24: Fort Bragg hospital negotiations continuing. On Thursday, Oct. 17, Adventist Health released an update on its renegotiation with the MCHCD Board.

    Oct. 25: Pharmacy burglary suspects arrested. Three Southern California residents were arrested recently on suspicion of burglarizing multiple pharmacies throughout California, including locations in Ukiah and Willits, the Ukiah Police Department reported.

    Oct. 26: Alleged arson on Great Redwood Trail. A Ukiah man was arrested on suspicion of arson recently for allegedly “intentionally and recklessly” starting a fire along the Great Redwood Trail, the Ukiah Police Department reported.

    Oct. 27:  New courthouse design, a second look. State officials overseeing construction of the planned $145 million Mendocino County Courthouse are pushing back against harsh local criticism of its design.
