Country star Tracy Lawrence has a podcast called TL's Road House. On this week's episode, he welcomed his friend and fellow country star Tim McGraw. The two pals who came up in '90s country together talked about what it's like getting older in their business, with McGraw cracking, "You don't want to sing about tailgates and bikinis when you're 58 years old."
They also talked about the physical challenges to performing live shows as you get older because you want to give fans a great show, but McGraw, for example, has had two knee replacements and a back surgery, among other ailments, so that can make it tough to perform the way you used to.
One person who came up in conversation was Alan Jackson, who is slightly older than Lawrence and McGraw at 66, though they all started hitting it big at roughly the same time.

Jackson has had health problems in recent years stemming from Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, which he was diagnosed with over 10 years ago, though he only went public about it in 2021 in a Today Show interview. CMT is not fatal, but it is degenerative. It causes progressive loss of muscle tissue and loss of feeling in the extremities. People with CMT may also have trouble with their balance and have difficulty walking.
Jackson announced on May 18 that that night's performance was his "last road show" because he's "winding down," though he is going to put on one "big finale" concert next year in Nashville.
McGraw admitted that his health issues have "changed the way" he performs live.
"It's gonna come to a point to where I'm either gonna have to decide to change the way I do a live show to continue to do it or just not do it anymore," said McGraw, to which Lawrence asked, "You don't think you'll just kind of be a guy that just stands there like Alan?"
"No, I can't do that," said McGraw, who is known for his active stage performances.
"It's sad to watch him," said Lawrence, to which McGraw replied, "Oh, I know, but I love Alan."
"I love Alan too," said Lawrence, adding, "It's just sad to watch as we're all getting older and it gets a bit tougher."
"It doesn't matter if he's sittin' down, you can hear Alan sing," said McGraw, adding, "And I say that now, I say I wouldn't want to do it, but look, we love what we do and as it gets older, look, if people want to still show up and see me sitting down singing, then maybe I will."
