Ukraine said it has shot down 20 out of 31 drones launched by Russia overnight as part of an ongoing attack launched on Christmas Day by the Kremlin.
Of the 31 drones, 11 “imitator-drones” did not reach their target due to the actions of the Ukranian military, it said.
It comes after Christmas Day in Ukraine was disrupted by a barrage of attacks from Russia targeting the former’s energy infrastructure.
Around half a million people in Kharkiv region were left without heating in freezing temperatures, while parts of the country, including the capital Kyiv, experienced blackouts.
Ukraine said its air defences downed 59 out of 78 missiles and 54 out of 102 drones launched on Wednesday.
Many Ukrainians spent Christmas Day in bomb shelters. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said it was “inhuman” that Russia had “deliberately” chosen the holiday for an attack.
“Russian evil will not break Ukraine and will not spoil Christmas,” he said on Wednesday.
World leaders, including US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack.
Starmer said: “I pay tribute to the resilience of the Ukrainian people, and the leadership of President Zelensky, in the face of further drone and missile attacks from Putin’s bloody and brutal war machine, with no respite, even at Christmas.
“As we go into the New Year, it remains vital that we redouble our resolve to place Ukraine in the strongest possible position to end Russia’s illegal aggression against the Ukrainian people.”
