Airline passengers in high spirits with holiday travel in full swing at Charlotte airport

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — With the holidays in full swing, passengers crowded much of Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Monday. Despite a few long lines, travelers seemed to be in high spirits.

“It’s been good so far,” said Barbara Beck who was flying to Phoenix with her daughter.

Sheila Jackson, who was flying with her one-year-old grandson to visit her daughter in San Antonio, said her travel day had been smooth, having just finished checking a few suitcases at an airline counter.

“We had a good driver, we took the shuttle, he’s really good, got us through the traffic,” she said.

The positive energy could be attributed to manageable waits and on-time departures, or maybe it was Glen Hanket’s spring-shaped Santa hat he wore as he navigated the lines at CLT. Hanket was on his way to White Plains, NY.

Surge in road, air travel expected as people head home for holidays

Charlotte Douglas Intl. Airport expects more holiday travelers than last year

“I picked this up at a craft shop in Davidson 14 years ago and it brings so much joy to people’s faces, see it bobbing,” he told Queen City News.

Whether or not your travel experience is pleasant at CLT this holiday season, there are some things to know if it is your first time flying since last year.

CLT recently completed the upper deck for vehicles dropping off departing passengers. It is now divided into two sections—one for cars, the other for buses. Pick-up for everyone is still on the lower level, also divided into two sections.

Depending on which airline you are flying, you may also have to walk a bit further to your gate. CLT completed an expansion of Terminal A this past fall. Those parking before they take flight can take advantage of new bridges to the ticketing area that were opened to the public this summer.

With all the changes, Jackson suggested patience and starting early. Her grandson is stuck with kicking back and focusing on enjoying his first plane ride, “So he’s just chilling, while Granny pushes him around.”

The vast majority of departing flights out of CLT were on time throughout the day on Monday.
