Before Mel and Jack, there was Everett and Sarah.
The latter two—Mel's parents—will reportedly be the focus of a Virgin River spinoff. While Netflix has yet to confirm the series, a prequel to the romantic drama was reported in February 2024.
Season 6 of Virgin River features Mel's biological father and late mother. Everett and Sarah are seen in flashbacks of them meeting and falling in love in the 1970s. Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith previously told Tudum that "getting to look at a different romantic relationship but still in the world of Virgin River is exciting."
Smith added, "I think with Mel and Jack, they’ve gone through so much, and to get to see another couple in the same universe dealing with the ups and downs of a love story just feels like a fresh opportunity."

No word yet on when the prequel would premiere. However, Virgin River returns for its sixth season on Dec. 19, 2024, and has already been renewed for a seventh season.

According to Deadline, the spinoff will explore Everett and Sarah’s origin story.

A cast has not been confirmed, but Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr are portraying younger versions of Everett and Sarah in Season 6 of Virgin River. Prior to them being cast, Entertainment Weekly reported that the younger actors playing Mel's parents would "carry over to a planned spinoff series about their origin story."

Mel's late mother Sarah is characterized as a "witty free spirit from the big city with an ardent passion for activism who’s trying to avoid the conventional and traditional life of a young woman" and "can’t help chasing an instant spark with a handsome musician who might just be her star-crossed soulmate."
Meanwhile, Everett is described as a "handsome and freewheeling singer-songwriter with a poet’s soul," who one day will "pursue his dreams of the stage, but for now, he’s skimming through life in a VW van, until a chance meeting with a beautiful hitchhiker may just show him there’s more to life than he ever thought possible."
