Mystery drone sightings continue in New Jersey

Mystery drone sightings over New Jersey have garnered significant attention since November 18, 2024, with reports indicating their presence over critical infrastructure. The drones have been observed flying near reservoirs, power lines, and military bases, raising concerns among residents and officials alike . Although federal agencies such as the FBI and DHS assert there is no evidence of a national security threat, local leaders are demanding further investigation and transparency regarding these unidentified aerial vehicles. This disconnect between federal assurances and local apprehensions underscores the need for heightened communication from authorities.

The sightings have put intense pressure on federal agencies to provide more information about the aircraft, as officials have urged calm and emphasized there is no evidence suggesting the sightings pose a security threat.

“I want to assure the American public that we are on it,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”

Reported drone activity prompted at least one airport – New York’s Stewart International Airport – to temporarily close its runways for about an hour on Friday night.

“This has gone too far,” said New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Saturday, adding last month she “directed the New York State Intelligence Center to actively investigate drone sightings and coordinate with federal law enforcement to address this issue.”

After White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby previously claimed the drones were not a threat to public safety, Rogan called the claims from the US government “sus.” The concerns were also dismissed by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who said, “Some of those drone sightings are, in fact, drones. Some are manned aircraft that are commonly mistaken for drones. And we do see duplicative reporting.”

In Massachusetts, 10 to 15 drones were reported hovering over a home Thursday night in Harwich on Cape Cod. A resident told police they were bright and she observed them for more than an hour.

Earlier that evening, an off-duty police officer in the same town noticed similar activity near a public safety complex, police said. The information was forwarded to the FBI and Massachusetts State Police.

Drones were also spotted last month in the U.K. The U.S. Air Force said several small unmanned aircraft were detected near four military bases in England that are used by American forces.

Despite reassurances that there is no immediate public safety risk, the lack of clarity about the drones' origin and purpose continues to fuel speculation and concern among New Jersey's residents.
