CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) - A sixth-grader was struck and killed by a vehicle Friday morning in northwest Charlotte, local authorities say.

The incident occurred just after 7 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, in the 800 block of Gum Branch Road. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say an 11-year-old was struck and found unresponsive with life-threatening injuries. Medic transported him to Atrium Health CMC, where he succumbed to the injuries.

    Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools later confirmed that the pedestrian was a sixth-grade student at Coulwood STEM Academy. The school is less than a mile from where the crash happened.

    A 2016 Nissan Frontier was reportedly stopped a short distance from the victim was being treated.

    CMPD says its investigation indicated that the victim was crossing Gum Branch Road outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the Nissan truck.

    CMPD's Crime Scene Search and Charlotte Fire also assisted.

    Impairment and speed are not contributing factors. The investigation into this incident is active and ongoing.
